문통(文通)의 계통 연구-구록(句錄)과 문록(文錄)을 중심으로 (A Study of the System of Muntong(文通) with a Close Examination of Gurok(句錄) and Munrok(文錄))

초록

과거에는 개인 문집을 간행할 때 자료 수집과 편차 이외에 산삭과 교정에도 적잖은 공력을 기울였다. 판각과 인행에 엄청난 비용이 드는 탓에 최대한 작품 수를 줄여 그 비용을 최소화하고, 가작을 정선함으로써 문집의 완성도를 높이기 위한 목적이었다. 이 과정에서 저자의 미세한 숨결과 성향을 파악할 수 있는 자료가 누락되기도 하고, 혹은 저자의 관료적·학자적 삶을 부각시키고자 문학이나 일상, 신변에 관한 글을 고의로 배제했으며, 미묘한 정치적 사안에 연루될 소지가 있는 작품은 애초에 간행 대상에서 제외하기 일쑤였다. 이러한 연유로 초고본과 교정본, 간여본(刊餘本)이 주목을 받는 것이고, 저자의 친필본일 경우에는 학술적 가치가 배가된다.
서파(西陂) 유희(柳僖)의 한시집 「구록(句錄)」과 산문집 「문록(文錄)」의 경우는 서파의 친필 교정본뿐만 아니라 여러 종의 전사본까지 함께 남아 있다. 특히 친필 교정본에는 전사본에 누락된 많은 작품이 수록되어 있거니와 다양한 인물이 가한 문학 비평, 서파가 육필로 작성한 교정 내용, 산삭 배경에 관한 기술 등이 빼곡하게 실려 있어 서파 문학을 이해하는 데 중요한 단서를 제공한다. 아울러 「구록」과 「문록」 이외의 여타 저술도 대부분 여러 본의 친필 교정본과 전사본이 함께 전하고 있으므로 본격적인 연구에 앞서 면밀한 텍스트 교감이 선행되어야 함은 췌언의 여지가 없다.
서파의 『문통』은 19세기를 대표하는 백과전서적 저서로서 조선 후기 실학사를 심화하고 그 외연을 확장하는 데 필수적인 문헌이다. 서파 자신도 생전에 본인 저술의 편차까지는 완성하지 못했고, 영남유림의 도움을 받으며 『문통』 간행에 주력했던 증손 유근영(柳根永)도 결국 전체 체재를 확정하지 못했다. 서파가 구축한 백과적 지식세계와 학문적 스펙트럼을 일시에 포괄하는 분류체계를 마련하기가 어려웠기 때문이다.
이에 필자는 서파가 언급한 용어를 활용하여 어록(語錄)‒유록(類錄)‒서독(書牘)‒구록(句錄)‒문록(文錄)‒외집(外集)이라는 분류 기준을 설정하여 각개 저술을 포함시켰고, 훈고(訓詁)라는 분류 항목을 별도로 마련하여 훈고류 전적을 따로 묶는 방안을 제시했다. 그리고 사주당이 서파에게 드리운 학문적·정서적 영향력, 모친에 대한 서파의 존중의 뜻, 유근영과 정인보의 기술, 저술의 성격과 분량 등에 착안하여 서파가 『태교신기음의』를 『문통』의 첫머리에 두려했다는 점을 가설로써 제기하였다.

영어초록

When an author published an anthology of his/her writings in the past, as much consideration was given to editing and proofreading as to gathering of materials and organization of the compilation. It was to minimize the number of works included in the collection and thus minimize the cost of publication, for producing a woodcut for printing and publishing were a costly endeavor. The editing and proofreading processes also helped achieve high level of quality by allowing a careful selection of finest works. Often during these processes, materials that reveal the author’s intimate voice or personal inclination were left out. Literary works as well as works dealing with the author’s daily life or personal affairs were often excluded intentionally in order to highlight the bureaucratic and scholarly side of the author. Works that could implicate the author in sensitive political issues were commonly removed from consideration for publication. Therefore, the author’s first draft, revised draft as well as the manuscript of left‒out writings attract attention from researchers. Especially, the autograph copy of the author has a greater academic value.
In the case of Seopa Yu Hui’s anthology of Chinese poetry Gurok and essay collection Munrok, several hand‒scribed copies as well as the autograph revised manuscript have survived. Especially, the latter includes many works that are omitted in other manuscripts. It also contains literary critique contributed by many individuals, proofreading and revision comments in Seopa’s own handwriting, and description of why certain editing choices were made, thus providing important insights for understanding Seopa’s literature. In addition to Gurok and Munrok, most of other works are accompanied by several copies of autograph revised draft and manuscripts. Thus, needless to say, a close cross‒reference of all manuscripts should precede the full‒fledged study.
The Muntong authored by Seopa is an encyclopedic compilation of writings representative of the 19th century; it is an essential literature for deepening the history of Silhak and extending its denotation. Seopa himself could not complete cataloging of his writings; his great‒grandson Yu Geunyeong, who, with the help from Confucian scholars of Yeongnam region, devoted himself to the publication of Muntong, could not finalize its format. It is because to devise a classification system encompassing the world of encyclopedic knowledge Seopa built and the wide academic spectrum that the anthology covers was such a difficult task. For that reason, I adopted the terminology mentioned by Seopa and developed the following classification criteria for grouping Seopa’s writings: Eorok, Yurok, Seodok, Gurok, Munrok, and Oejib. In addition, the author created a separate Hungo category to group Seopa’s exegetical writings.
