    초록

This paper examines the intertextuality between Harriet Martineau's writings on women's issues in the Victorian periodicals and her first domestic novel, Deerbrook focusing on Martineau's formation of literary career. The feminist concerns and narrative strategies found in her anonymous writing in 1820's and 1830's can be traced in the text of Deerbrook, which shows how the distinction between fiction and non fiction can be blurred and how Martineau handles the various personal and professional dilemmas by using the media of journalism.
Located within the context of anonymous journalism, her activities as the contributor to Monthly Repository or The People's Journal played an important role in developing her authorial identities as well as exerting influence on the feminist issues of contemporary society. The experiences as the anonymous contributor to the journal led her to adopt narrative devices of periodical journalism in order to find a more objective perspective on women's issues and to expand the subject matter of her novel.
Deerbrook can be viewed as an extension of her work in the reformist journals, especially in terms of its ideological position on feminist issues and the use of distanced narrative point of view. In particular, Maria Young's point of view can be regarded as Martineau's way of exploring women's issues in the domestic novel. Existing always at the margin of the marriage plot of Deerbrook, Maria's point of view is objective and peripheral. Maria assumes a narrative position that leads a reader to examine the relations of women's education, vocation and marriage. Her narrative position also allows her to review the actions of community without any personal motivation, thereby exerting moral influences on the community.
Martineau's early anonymous writings are connected with her redefinition and complication of the domestic novel to include discussions of women's social, political, and economic roles. Her activities in the Victorian journalism contributed to expand her literary career and reform the terms by which woman question would be presented and discussed.
