초록

본 논문은 광해군代 인목대비 폐위논의를 둘러싸고 벌어진 『春秋』 해석논쟁과 그 결과물로 등장한 白沙 李恒福의 『魯史零言』을 분석한 것이다.
『노사영언』은 조선 춘추경학사에서 『춘추』의 全 분량을 다룬 최초의 기록이자, 조선시대의 유일한 『國語』 편집본이라는 의의를 지닌다. 17세기 초광해군이 즉위한 후 大北과 西․南人 세력이 『춘추』의 기사를 인용하며폐모논쟁을 벌였으며, 결말이 폐모 찬성쪽으로 기울자 이항복은 올바른 『 춘추』의 이해를 천명하고자 『노사영언』을 지었다.
광해군의 집권과 대북의 정권 장악은 臨海君을 처단한 데에서 시작하여인목대비 폐위까지 이어졌다. 대북은 임해군과 金悌男, 그리고 永昌大君을 역모죄로 처단하면서 忠을 강조하며 討逆論을 제기하였고, 이에 반대하는서․남인 세력은 同氣 간의 정을 우선하는 全恩論을 강조하였다. 이후 전은론은 인목대비 폐위논의에 이르러 孝를 강조하는 綱常論으로 발전하였다.
본 논문의 문제인식은 당시 폐모 찬․반측이 자신들의 주장을 입증할 만한 전거로 동일한 『춘추』 기사를 인용한 데에서 출발하였다. 양측이 주장한 기사는 「莊公」 元年 “夫人孫于齊”와 「閔公」 2年 “夫人姜氏孫于邾”로, 잘못을 저지르고 타국으로 달아난 어머니에 대하여 그 자식인 임금은 어떻게 처신해야 옳은지를 논의한 것이었다. 이에 관하여 대북은 인목대비가母道를 상실하였기 때문에 처벌해야 한다고 주장하였고(토역론), 이항복을비롯한 서․남인은 자식이 어머니를 원수로 대하는 의리는 없다[子無讐母] 며 폐위를 반대하였다(강상론).
『노사영언』에는 『춘추』 經文을 모두 삭제하고 『春秋左氏傳』을 本傳으로 삼아 기사의 중요도에 따라 취사선택하였고, 사건에 관련된 내용이 『國 語』에 있으면 선별하여 첨가하였다. 『노사영언』은 『춘추』가 시작하는 「은공」의 앞에 西周의 멸망을 다룬 「春秋以前周事」 한 편을 추가함으로써 춘추시대의 자연스러운 개막을 의탁하였고, 다년간에 발생한 사건을 編年體 로 기록해놓은 『춘추』의 약점을 보완하여 紀事本末體와 유사한 형식으로구성하였다.
『노사영언』 內에는 이항복의 직접적인 언설이 기록되어 있지 않으므로책의 편집 방식을 분석함으로써 간접적으로 드러나는 지점을 포착하여 논의를 진행하였다. 이는 드러내어 표현하진 않지만 그 속에 은미한 大義를담고 있는 『춘추』의 褒貶 방식과도 비슷한 점이 있다. 본 논문은 『노사영언』에 수록된 「은공」에서 「희공」까지의 기사를 분석하고, 그 기사가 담고있는 忠孝의 의미를 도출함으로써 폐모논의에 대한 이항복의 충효인식과춘추해석방식을 밝혔다는 데에 의의가 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the interpretation of the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu 春秋) during Gwanghae Kun Era, concerning the debates on deposing the queen, and Paksa 白沙 Yi Hangbok 李恒福's Nosa Yŏ ngŏn 魯史零言. In the early 17 th century (after the accession of Prince Gwanghae to the throne), three political parties—Great Northerners (Taebuk 大 北), Westerners (Sŏin 西人), and Southerners (Namin 南人)—cited a text of the Spring and Autumn Annals so as to voice their opinion on the issue of deposing Queen Inmok. When this dispute resulted in the agreement of deposing of the queen, Yi wrote the Nosa Yŏngŏn to provide a better understanding of the Spring and Autumn Annals. The Nosa Yŏngŏn is considered as an unique work because of two reasons: (1) It is the first commentary which deals with the full texts of the Spring and Autumn Annals: and (2) It is the only commentary which includes many important records of the Discourses of the States (Guoyu 國語), a book of historical narrative. Prince Gwanghae and Great Northerners came to power by punishing Prince Yimhae and continuously dominated the Chosŏn by deposing Queen Inmok. Great Northerners shed light on the virtue “loyalty (zhong 忠)” and suggested t’oyŏknon 討逆論 (an argument for the agreement of deposing Queen Inmok), when they inflicted punishment on Prince Yimhae, Kim Chenam, and Grand Prince Yŏngch’ang by reason of planning conspiracy. On the other hand, Westerners and Southerners emphasized chŏnenon 全恩論, an argument that emphasizes a good relationship between siblings. While debating on deposing Queen Inmok, chŏnenon was developed into kangsangron 綱常論, an argument that focuses on the virtue “filial duty (xiao 孝).” The awareness of this paper has been raised by the paradoxical fact: the affirmative side and the negative side both utilized the same records of the Spring and Autumn Annals—Year 1 of Duke Zhuang (Zhuanggong 莊公) “Our Lady took refuge in Qi.” 夫人孫于齊 and Year 2 of Duke Min (Mingong 閔 公) “Our princess dame Jiang fled to Zhu.” 夫人姜氏孫于邾—in order to support their opinions. These two records are related with the issue on how a king should react toward his immoral mother, and regarding this issue, Great Northerners opined that Queen Inmok should be punished because she had lost her sense of morality, so-called “t’oyŏknon.” On the contrary, Westerners and Southerners, including Yi Hangbok, opposed the Great Northerners’s opinion on the ground that “a son cannot consider his mother as an enemy” 子無讐母, so-called “kangsangron.” Yi Hangbok did not include the original text of the Spring and Autumn Annals in the Nosa Yŏngŏn. Instead, he selectively wrote an important record of the Zuo Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu Zuoshi Zhuan 春秋左氏傳) in the commentary, and then adding a relevant text of the Discourses of the States. Also, he appended Chapter Ch’unch’u Ichŏn Chusa 春 秋以前周事 in front of the Nosa Yŏngŏn in order to smoothly connect with the Spring and Autumn Annals’ first book, Duke Yin (Yingong 隱公); the former explains how Western Zhou collapsed and the latter deals with how the Spring and Autumn period begun. Furthermore, he employed a topic-related style of historical writing (jishi benmo ti 紀事本末體) in order to rectify the drawbacks of the Spring and Autumn Annals’ chronological style (biannian ti 編年體).
This paper examines his way of compiling the historical records of the Spring and Autumn Annals in order to figure out his opinion on a historical event, since the Nosa Yŏngŏn does not contain any comment of Yi Hangbok.
His annotation style resembles the Spring and Autumn Annals’ writing style which indicates the writer’s opinion not directly but indirectly. This paper is meaningful in that, by evaluating the records from Chapter Duke Yin (Yingong 隱公) to Chapter Duke Xi (Xigong 僖公) in the Nosa Yŏngŏn, it demonstrates not only his annotation method but also his opinion on loyalty and filial duty.
