1950년대 『주간희망』의 콘텐츠 변모와 젠더정치 (Content Transformation and Gender Politics of “Weekly HIMANG(Hope)” in the 1950s)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 1950년대 시사종합주간지 『주간희망』의 핵심 콘텐츠의 변모를 실증적으로 분석하고 여기에 내장된 젠더정치의 함의를 규명하는 데 있다. 『주간희망』이 창간된 1955년은 언론출판매체 모두 상업주의 노선을 분명히 하던 시기이지만, 사회체제의 막강한 영향력 아래 저널리즘의 불공정성이 가중된 시대이기도 했다. 『주간희망』이 편집노선으로 내세운 해설저널리즘은 이러한 매체지형에 대한 문제제기이자 성공적인 안착을 위한 우회 방식이기도 했다. 특히 제100호라는 주간지의 기념비적 성공을 제2의 도약의 계기로 삼으면서 해설저널리즘의 대중성 강화전략을 본격화한다.
양대 매체전략을 대표하는 핵심 콘텐츠들에서 여성관련 기사는 골 깊은 가부장적 뉴스 관행과 사회체계에서 끊임없이 상징적 소멸을 거듭하였다. 제100호 이전 기사들은 뉴스메이커로 주부, 아내, 어머니를 번갈아 호명하고, 특히 기혼 여성의 사회활동과 성적 욕망에 대해 왜곡되고 차별적인 비판담론을 반복 생산하였다. 전통적 성역할과 성규범을 내면화한 근대 여성을 강요하는 것으로, 그것은 전후 위기적 상황을 규제하기 위해 전략적으로 공론화한 셈이었다. 그러나 제100호 이후 짧은 시기 여성관련 기사들은 여성의 성공사례를 전면화하고 사회적 발언 가능성을 제시하면서, 이전의 젠더정치에 잠복했던 불안들이 스스럼없이 균열에 동참하지만 저항의 가능성을 잠시 엿보았을 뿐이었다. 뒤이은 기사들은 선택적 배제와 강화된 대중성 속에서 지배적인 젠더질서로 복귀하는 한계를 드러냈다.
『주간희망』의 젠더정치는 대체적으로 가부장인 젠더질서를 재생산하여 전후사회 여성의 삶과 가능성을 제한하는 데 복무했다. 전후파여성의 부재와 여성의 성공신화 등 균열의 지점들은 특징적 국면임에도 일부분에 그쳐 전략적 차별화에 실패했다. 이러한 면면들은 『주간희망』의 편집진들이 1960년대 주간지 창간에 깊숙이 연루되어 있다는 점에서 1960년대 이후 주간지의 젠더정치학의 단초를 엿볼 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the meaning of transformational characteristics of the Weekly HIMANG(Hope) magazine in the context of gender politics. In the time that the first volume of the magazine was issued, two social trends were overwhelming the media world of Korea; all the mass media followed commercialism further widely and deeply, and the unfairness of journalism which was oppressed by power of the state increased. The magazine Weekly HIMANG(Hope) claimed to the banner for explanatory journalism. Thus, it seemed a complain about those trends and a detour for its success. In reality, the plan of the magazine seemed to succeed. At the monumental time when the magazine had issued 100th volume, it tried to tactically insert soft news or articles on womankind in form of “This Week's Topics”.
The time before, it had often run such news or articles, whereas most of them seemed overwhelmed by patriarchy. Calling the news maker “house maker”, “wife”, or “mother”, they had repeatedly produced critical or discriminate discourses on social activity and sexual self-determination of married womankind. By forcing modern women to internalize traditional gender roles and gender norms, they strategically specialized and publicized the ideals of nationalist gender politics at that time. From the 100th issue, the magazine seemed to be an inflection point in the context of gender politics. It was getting started to bring successful female stories to public notice to the fore, to implying the possibilities of their social or public remarks, and to taste the resistance against the former gender politics. Subsequent it revealed a limit to the return to patriarchal gender order in the long absence and intensified popularity.
The gender politics of “Weekly HIMANG(Hope)” was largely about reproducing the patriarchal gender order to limit the lives and possibilities of women in postwar society. The points of the crack, such as the absence of post-war women and the myth of women's success, were only characteristic but failed to differentiate strategically. These aspects gave a glimpse into the beginning of weekly gender politics since the 1960s because the editors of Weekly HIMANG(Hope) were deeply involved in the creation of the weekly magazine.
