초록

The purpose of this research is to analyze historic points in modern Korean fashion history objectively by conducting comparative analysis between the works of Kyung-ja Choi and Nora Noh. The research questions that lead to this study are first, what were the differences in the developments of the two brands Kook-je Yangjangsa and House of Nora Noh, and what events in Korean fashion history were involved in their development? Secondly, what were the significant works of the two designers during the 1950s to 1960s, and what are the characteristics shown in these designs? Thirdly, what was taken from Choi and Noh’s legacies that formed the standards for 20th century Korean modern fashion? To answer these questions, an analysis of previous studies on Choi and Noh, 72 media articles about Choi, and 92 media articles about Noh are used. Furthermore, this study will attempt to determine the philosophies behind the designers’ main works to learn about Korean high fashion trends during the 1950s to 1960s. The methodology employed in this study is content analysis. Choi and Noh were active as competitors during the post-traditional period of Korean fashion; they were trendsetters and leaders of Korean fashion from the 1950s to 1960s. There is a clear difference in the paths the two designers took. Choi brought the dressmaking system to Korea from Japan, lead designer group activities to help colleagues succeed, and worked on making an education platform. Noh, on the other hand was inspired by American and French fashion systems, causing her to eventually enter the American market as an individual. Regarding the design ideas, the commonalities between Choi and Noh found through research would be that both designers were inspired by French designers: Christian Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga, etc. The designers focused on spreading Korean cotton and silk to the world.
