이필제의 입장에서 본 1871년 영해 거사 (Yeonghae Revolt in 1871 from Lee Pil-je’s Point of View)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 영해 거사의 실체에 대한 성격을 규명하고자 이필제의 입장에서 고찰을 시도하였다. 이에 따른 내용은 첫째, 이필제가자신의 거사에 정당성을 부여하고자 해월 최시형을 접촉하기 위해 공을 들인 일련의 일들, 둘째, 이필제를 필두로 거사에 가담한 동학인들의 행적 등을 추적하였다. 셋째, 거사의 실체에 대한 성격을 규명하고자 교단측 자료와 관변측 자료를 검토하여 교조신원 운동과 인부, 그리고 동학교인과 비동학교인을 구분하는 유건과 홍주의, 청주의의 상관관계 등을 고찰하였다.
그동안 역사학계는 ‘난(亂)’을 규정하는 개념 때문에 영해 거사를 ‘이필제란(李弼濟亂)’이라고 이름을 붙여, 이필제의 거사를 조선의 사회적모순이 격화되면서 민중의 세력이 강화되는 하나의 현상으로 이해하거나, 갑오동학농민란으로 발전하기 전의 과도기적 단계로 평가했다. 비교적 최근, 영해 거사 관련 자료가 계속 발굴되면서 다양한 해석을 요구하는 연구 성과들이 축적되고 있다. 그런데 교단측 자료를 참고한연구와 관변측 자료를 참고한 연구가 관점을 달리해 영해 거사를 바라보고 있다. 대부분의 연구는 이필제 개인에 대한 평가뿐 아니라 그가 주도한 거사에 작변, 병란, 변란, 동학 최초의 교조신원운동, 한반도에서 처음으로 성공한 근대 시민혁명 등 다양한 해석과 명칭을 부여하고있다. 사실, 역사 연구에서 일련의 사건을 두고 용어나 명칭을 규정하는 일은 연구자의 개인적인 시각과 관점, 연구가 이루어진 시기의 여러 조건들에서 비롯된 역사 인식의 다층성을 반영할 뿐 아니라 연구자개인의 막중한 책임이 따르는 지난한 작업이다.
따라서 본 연구는 영해 거사의 성격을 성급하게 규정하기에 앞서 이필제가 주도한 거사의 실체에 다가서기 위해서는 중립적인 자료 발굴이 더욱 많이 이루어져야 하고 거사의 명분과 거사 당일의 상관관계들에 대한 면밀한 재검토가 필요함을 제기하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the character of Yeonghae Revolt from Lee Pil-je’s point of view in order to find the truth. The key contents according to this are, first, a series of things that Lee Pil-je worked hard to meet Haewol Choi Si- hyeong to give legitimacy to his armed insurrection, and second, traced the actions of Donghak people who participated in the uprising led by Lee Pil-je. Third, in order to clarify the character of it, the researcher reviewed the materials from the religious denomination and the government, and examined the movement to vindicate the founder’s innocence and official seals, the relationship between the Donghak people and the non-Donghak people, including the correlation between blue color costume and red color costume.
In the meantime, the history academia has named Yeonghae Revolt as ‘Lee Pil –je’ Rebellion’ because of the concept of ‘Rebellion’, and it is said that Lee Pil-je’s revolt was one of the strengthening of the people’s power as social contradictions intensified in Joseon. It was understood as a phenomenon or evaluated as a transitional stage before developing into the Gabo Donghak Peasant Rebellion. Relatively recently, as data related to the uprising continues to be discovered, research results requiring various interpretations are accumulating. However, the study that referred to the data of the Donghak orders and the study that referred to the data of the government are looking at Yeonghae Revolt from a different point of view. Most of the studies not only evaluate Lee Pil-je as an individual, but also give various interpretations and names to the actions he led, such as insurrection, armed insurgency, rebellion, Donghak’s first movement to vindicate the founder’s innocence, and the first successful modern civil revolution on the Korean peninsula etc.
In fact, the definition of terms or names for a series of events in historical research not only reflects the researcher’s personal perspective and viewpoints, and the multilayered perception of history derived from various conditions at the time the research was conducted, but is also a great responsibility of the individual researcher. It is a difficult task to follow them.
Prior to hastily defining the nature of the revolt, this study suggested that in order to approach the truth of the revolt led by Lee Pil-je, more neutral data should be discovered and a careful reexamination, and the correlation should be required between the cause of the revolt and the day of the revolt.
