우리나라 번역 그림책 표지의 시각적 변형 연구- 2004년~2014년 칼데콧 수상작을 중심으로- (The study of visual transformation of the cover of translated picture books by Korean - Focusing on Caldecotte Winner 2004~2014-)

초록

1980년대부터 지금까지 우리나라 그림책 시장의 많은 부분을 외국 번역본 그림책이 차지하고 있다. 특히 그림책의 노벨상이라 불리는 미국의 칼데콧(caldecotte)수상작들은 대부분 한국으로 수입, 출판되고 있다. 하지만 날로 급증하는 번역그림책에 대한 시각적 연구는 미미한 실정이다. 특히 일반 소설책과는 달리 그림책의 표지는 단순히 가독성을 위한 겉싸개로서의 역할을 하는 것이 아니라, 저자의 본질적인 의도와 주제를 반영하고 전반적인 책의 분위기를 표현한다. 또한 본문과 연결되는 서사의 구조 안에 존재하기도 한다. 본 연구자는 지난 10년 동안의 칼데콧 수상작으로, 우리나라에 번역, 출간된 총 40권의 번역본의 표지를 조사하였다. 그리고 표지에서, 조형적 표현으로서의 제목 글자, 그림, 레이아웃의 변형이 일어나지 않은 23권을 제외하고, 변형이 일어난 17권의 그림책(42.5%)을 선정하였다.
그 결과, 제목글자의 변형(크기, 색, 형태)이 가장 많이 일어났고, 그림 변형에서는 원본의 뒤표지가 앞표지가 되면서 이야기의 결말이 너무 빨리 나오는 경우, 뒤표지가 변형되어 전체 서사가 끊긴 경우, 특정요소가 생략되어 의미생성이 달라진 경우가 있었다. 또한 레이아웃에서도 제목배열의 변형으로 인해 표지에서 표현된 본문 이야기의 분위기가 감소, 달라졌다. 이러한 변형은 표지에서 책의 주요 분위기와 관점을 효과적으로 전달하지 못하거나 저자의 의도를 간과, 변형시키는 문제점을 야기하였다.
그림책은 앞표지부터 뒤표지까지 하나의 작품이며 그림이 주가 되면서도 글과 그림이 상호보완적 관계 속에서 의미를 만들어 나가는 특성을 가지고 있다. 이러한 특성을 고려하여 번역그림책의 표지에서는, 제목 글자, 그림, 레이아웃들이 저자의 의도와 벗어나지 않도록 적절하게 변형, 출간되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

From the1980s to present, the picture book market in South Korea has been proliferated by translated picture books of foreign countries. Particularly, most Caldecotte award winning books (which is considered the Nobel Prize in the picture book world) has been imported and published in Korea. However, there has not been any significant visual research conducted on translation of picture books even though the translated versions of picture books have been rapidly saturating our market over the years. Unlike a novel, the title page of a picture book isn’t merely a wrap of a book but also is used to emphasize the author’’s concept and subject. Moreover, it also co-exists in the structure of narration which is a gateway to the story board.
This research is based on an analysis of the title page of 40 translated picture books that Caldecotte award winning books of past 10 years. From the 40 books analyzed, 23 translated books did not have any alterations from the original book (alterations in the formative expression such as title, image, and layout) and 17 translated books (equivalent to 42.5%) have undergone transformations from the original book.
As a result, the research noted that the letter type of the title (size, color, and shape) had the most transformations. Some of the modifications made to the image include: the conclusion being presented earlier in the book as the back cover was moved to the front cover, disruption in the narration as the cover has been changed, and change in the generation of meaning as a particular element was omitted. Additionally, overall mood of the book has been toned down as the arrangement of the title was changed in the layout. Whereas the cover should convey the book’s main mood and perspective, the author’s intentions has been overlooked or scaled down and effective delivery of the topic and perspective of the original book was difficult due to these transformations.
The picture book is made up of the front cover to the end cover and the images on the book plays an integral part of the book and also complements the writings in the book. By taking the above mentioned traits into consideration, the picture book translations should stick close to the author’s intentions when the translation work is being done on the title letter type, image, and layout.
