초록

본 연구는 1903~1906년 漢城府 戶籍에 기재된 군인을 연구 대상으로 하여, 군인 호주에서 나타나는 집단적 성격과 특징을 구체적으로 살펴보았으며, 동시에 군인 호주와 관련된 내용 들을 그들의 가족 특징으로 재구성하여 접근하였다.
본 연구의 목적은 근대 초기의 역사적 사건과 제도적 측면에 제한되었던 당시 군인의 역사 관점을 보완하기 위하여, 그들에게 존재하였던 삶의 방식과 계층적 특징을 호적 자료로 복원하는 것에 목적을 두었다. 이에 당시 군인 거주가 집중되었던 한성부 특정 지역의 군인 호주 363명을 대상으로, 지역별(北署･中暑･東署) 그리고 유형별(前･現 軍官과 일반 軍兵)로 구별하여 다각적인 통계분석을 시도하였다.
그 결과 당시 한성부 군인은 궁궐과 주요 관청 그리고 주요 국가 시설이 다수 존재하였던 북서와 중서 그리고 동서에서 집중적으로 거주하였다. 중서 지역은 전･현 군관을 중심으로 대규모의 가택과 다수의 瓦家 소유 그리고 첩 포함 가족 구성 등 상위의 경제 능력을 보이고 있었으며, 고위 군관의 주요 거주 지역으로 나타나고 있었다. 이에 비해 북서와 동서는 현직 군관과 군병을 중심으로 중서의 군인과 비교하여 부계 혈연 중심의 가족 관계를 중시하는 보수적 경향을 강하게 보였다.
전･현 군관은 사회적으로 관직자로서 인식됨에 따라서 호주와 그들의 父 직업이 관료와 군관으로 나타나며 직업의 세습 경향을 보이고 있었다. 전･현 군관의 가택 내용과 기구･고용 동거 비율 등을 살펴보았을 때에, 그들의 사회적 지위와 경제적 능력은 한성부의 중상위 계층과 동일한 특성을 보이고 있었으며, 이에 비해서 일반 군병은 중하위 계층의 특성으로 나타났다.
결과적으로 본 연구는 당시 한성부에 거주했던 군인 계층의 거주 특성과 성격을 복원함으로써, 근대 초기 도시의 구성원으로서 그들의 역할과 성격에 대해서 규명하였다.

영어초록

This study was conducted to review the group features and characteristics of solider family heads and to reorganize their family characteristics with the contents related to soldier family heads with the subjects of soldiers listed in the family register of Hanseongbu from 1903 to 1906. The purpose of this study was to restore the soldiers’ living styles and characteristics of each class with family register data so as to supplement the historical viewpoint of the soldiers at that time that had been limited with historical events and systems of the early modern times. Hence, with the subjects of 363 soldier family heads in certain regions of Hanseongbu where many soldiers had lived, multiple statistical analyses were performed upon differentiation by region (north, central, and east) and by types of soldiers (retired or active military officers or general soldiers).
Results reveal that soldiers in Hanseongbu at that time lived in north, central, and east regions intensively where the palace, main public offices, and main national facilities were located. Retired and active military officers in the central region as the main residential area for higher class officers showed the high class economic power such as holding large-scale houses and multiple roof-tiled houses, family organization including concubines, and so on. On the other hand, those in the north and east regions mainly with the active military officers and general soldiers showed the strong tendency toward conservatism that empathized family relations focusing on paternal line, compared to those in the central region. Retired and active military officers perceived as the public officers in the society, therefore, the occupations of family heads and their fathers were shown mostly as public officers and military officers, demonstrating the hereditary tendency of the occupations. Reviewing the houses, tools, employment, and share of cohabitat of the retired and active officers, their social status and economic power showed the same characteristics with upper-middle class in Hanseongbu, while general soldiers showed the characteristics of lower-middle class.
In conclusion, this study investigated the roles and characteristics of soldiers living in Hanseongbu as the members of the city in the early modern times, by restoring their residential features and characteristics.
