The Observation of Gender Stereotyping in Music Instruments, and The Process of Musical Instrument Selections of Children: Comparing the result in 2009 and 2021

초록

Objectives The purposes of this study were to identify if there is a change in both gender-stereotype in musical instruments and in the number of students who chose gender-atypical instruments. In addition, this study sought to specify the parental influences on music instrument selections of children and the commonalities and differences of parental perspectives on children’s musical instrument selections.
Methods An explanatory sequential research was conducted consisting of both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The survey was conducted(n=328) to configure the change in gender-stereotype in music instruments, and the interview and case-cross analysis were directed to examine the relationship between parental influence and children’s music instrument selections.
Results This study describes that there has been less gender-stereotyping in musical instrument selection for ten years whilst the number of cross-over students has increased through quantitative research. Moreover, the transcribed interview and cross-case analysis showed that there were various influences in children’s musical instrument selections besides parental influence, and there were commonalities between parents.
Conclusions This study demonstrated that the process of a child’s selecting a musical instrument is projected from their parent’s musical background, music class experience, and peer pressure. Besides the portraits of parents provided three themes.
