<女容國傳>과 <閨中七友爭論記>에 나타난 조선후기 규방문화의 특징과 의미 (The Characteristics and Meanings of Gyubang Culture in the Late Joseon Dynasty Period that Appeared in and )

초록

조선후기 규방의 여성들은 고소설의 창작과 수용에 이르는 일련의 과정에서 큰 역할을 담당하였다. 특히 당대 여성들의 생활을 밀도 있게 다룬 대표적 작품으로 <여용국전>과 <규중칠우쟁론기>를 들 수 있다. 두 작품은 화장과 바느질이라는 여성의 생활문화를 소재로 도구들을 의인화하여 사건을 전개하고, 우의적 방식으로 부조리한 현실 세태를 풍자하였다. 이에 본고에서는 두 작품에 나타난 조선후기 규방문화의 특징과 의미를 고찰하였다.
첫째, 조선후기 규방문화의 흐름과 작품의 창작 배경을 살펴보았다. 조선후기에는 여성의 자아 성찰, 지적 호기심, 대상을 해석하는 다양한 시각 등 이전 시대와는 다른 변화의 조짐이 나타났다. 이처럼 대다수 남성 사대부들의 통제 하에서 억눌렸던 여성들의 표현 욕구를 통해 <여용국전>과 <규중칠우쟁론기>가 탄생하였다. 두 작품은 산문정신이 확산되었던 조선후기 여성문학의 토대 위에서 여성들의 체험이 반영된 규방문화의 영향을 받아 창작되었다.
둘째, <여용국전>과 <규중칠우쟁론기>에 나타난 규방문화의 특징을 살펴보았다. <여용국전>은 여성의 얼굴과 화장에 대한 이야기이며, <규중칠우쟁론기>는 여성의 바느질에 쓰이는 도구의 이야기이다. 두 작품에 나타난 규방문화의 특징은 세 가지이다. 먼저 두 작품에서는 화장과 바느질의 과정을 세밀하게 표현하여 사실감을 높이고 있다. 다음으로 기존의 통념을 깨고 변화된 여성관과 여성의식을 보여주었다. 끝으로 우의적 방식을 통해 여성의 입장에서 당대 사회가 안고 있는 문제와 부조리를 통렬하게 풍자하였다.
셋째, <여용국전>과 <규중칠우쟁론기>에 나타난 규방문화의 의미를 살펴보았다. 조선후기 여성들은 독자적인 규방문화를 바탕으로 문학을 창작하며 발전시켰다. 또한 실학정신을 바탕으로 한 실증적 태도와 치열한 기록정신은 규방문화에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 따라서 두 작품은 변화해 가는 여성 의식을 반영한 조선후기 규방문화의 정수라 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

In the late Joseon Dynasty period, women in Gyubang played a major role in the series of processes of creation and acceptance of classical novels. Representative works that densely dealt with the lives of women in those days may include <Yeoyonggukjeon(女容國傳)> and <Gyujungchirujaengnongi(閨中七友爭論記)>. Using women's living cultures, that is, make-up and sewing as materials, these two works personified tools to develop events and satirized the unreasonable social conditions in reality in allegorical ways.
First, the stream of Gyubang culture in the late Joseon Dynasty period and the background of the creation of the works were examined. <Yeoyonggukjeon> and <Gyujungchirujaengnongi> were born in the late Joseon Dynasty period as women's desire for expression, which had been suppressed under the control of the majority of male aristocrats, appeared. The two works could be created under the influence of the Gyubang culture reflecting the experience of women on the basis of woman literature in the late Joseon Dynasty period, when prose spirit was spreading. The two streams of woman literature and Gyubang culture interacted so that <Yeoyonggukjeon> and <Gyujungchirujaengnongi> could be created.
Second, the characteristics of Gyubang culture that appeared in <Yeoyonggukjeon> and <Gyujungchirujaengnongi> were examined. <Yeoyonggukjeon> is a story about women's faces and makeup, and <Gyujungchirujaengnongi> is a story about tools used in women's sewing. Three characteristics of Gyubang culture appeared in the two works. First, the two works enhanced the sense of reality by minutely expressing the processes of makeup and sewing. Next, the two works broke the existing conventional wisdom and showed changed views of womanhood and female consciousness. Finally, the two works scathingly satirized the problems and absurdity of the society in those days from the standpoint of women in allegorical ways.
Third, the meanings of Gyubang culture that appeared in <Yeoyonggukjeon> and <Gyujungchirujaengnongi> were examined. Women in the late Joseon Dynasty period created and developed literature based on their own Gyubang culture. The empirical attitudes based on the spirit of Silhak and the intense writing spirit greatly affected Gyubang culture. <Yeoyonggukjeon> and <Gyujungchirujaengnongi> are the essence of the Gyubang culture that reflected the changing female consciousness.
