고전소설 콘텐츠의 OTT 서비스와 그 미래- 구독형 서비스 넷플릭스와 왓챠의 영화를 중심으로 - (The Future of Classical Novel Contents and OTT Service- Focused on Films Netflix and Watcha -)

초록

이 글의 목적은 OTT 서비스의 원리와 구조에 기반을 두고 고전소설 콘텐츠의 활성화 방안을 탐색함으로써 고전소설의 미래를 여는 데 있다. 이는 고전소설 콘텐츠의 향유 로드를 확충하는 방법론적 모색인 동시에 고전소설 연구의 또 다른 관점과 방향에 관한 시론이다.
우선, 구독형 OTT 시장에서 스트리밍되는 고전소설 영화와 기본 정보를 개괄함으로써 전반적인 유통 상황을 조감하였다. 2021년 7월 기준, 넷플릭스와 왓챠를 통해 7.6%(10편)의 고전소설 영화가 서비스되고 있다. 이 가운데 왓챠의 최근 한 달간 시청률 5%에 든 작품은 <전우치>, <방자전>, <마담 뺑덕>이다. 그러나 고전소설 영화의 OTT 시장 진입률과 흥행 성적은 그 규모와 파급력에 비해 높지 않았다. 이어 마이크로 장르, 비슷한 콘텐츠, 이용자의 경험으로 구성된 평점과 코멘트를 중심으로 고전소설 영화의 유통과 소비 형태를 분석했다. 고전소설 영화는 OTT 플랫폼별로 새로운 장르와 의미를 부여받고 또 다른 소비 맥락을 형성하며 유통되었다. 하지만 개별 콘텐츠의 주요 성격과 해석에 바탕을 둔 메타데이터의 보강, 내적 친화성을 중심으로 한 비슷한 콘텐츠의 재구성, 이용자의 경험을 보다 적극적으로 수용한 추천 알고리즘의 설계가 필요한 것으로 나타났다.
고전소설 콘텐츠를 활성화하기 위해서는 고전(소설)에 관한 인식적 전환과 전략적 접근이 요구되었다. 이를 위해서는 고전소설 콘텐츠의 향유 원리에 토대를 두어 한국 영화사적 맥락에서 향유 로드를 구축해야 한다. 또한, 콘텐츠의 주요 특징과 이용자 해석에 기초한 메타데이터를 발굴하여 수용의 논리적 인과성을 마련하고, 소비 라인을 다변화하되 선택적 공략으로 접근성과 주목성을 높이는 전술이 필요했다. 끝으로, 달라진 미디어콘텐츠 제작, 유통, 소비 형태를 고려한 새로운 연구 방향과 관점의 전환이 요청되었다. 이에 고전의 범주 재구성에 대한 논의와 더불어 고전소설의 마이크로 장르 개발과 큐레이션 작업을 학술적 차원에서 수행할 것을 제안하였다.

영어초록

This study would look into the future of classical novel contents by exploring the types of the distribution of films based on classical novels and plans for revitalization based on the principle and structure of OTT services that occupied the media contents market and established new paradigms of consumption and distribution. This is a methodological search to expand the road of enjoying classical novel contents and an introduction on different directions and perspectives on studies of classical novels.
For this purpose, this study examined the status of films based on classical novels streaming through the subscription-type OTT platforms, Netflix and Watcha and their overall characteristics. As for the films based on classical novels, a total of 10 films, including seven full-length films and three animation films are distributed through Netflix and Watcha, which are less than 7.6% of all full-length films based on korean classical novels. Next, this study examined the types in which the films based on classical novels were distributed and consumed on the OTT platforms based on the recommendation algorithm and the interpretation and reaction of users. In the subscription-type OTT market, the films based on classical novels were given new meanings and formed another consumption context. Yet, to extend the accuracy of recommendation and the life force of contents, it would be necessary to discover metadata based on the main character of contents and user experience and supplement the recommendation algorithm.
Lastly, this study sought strategies for the distribution of classical novel contents and plans for revitalization. First, to promote the retention of classical novel contents and expand the supply route in the OTT market, a cognitive shift for classics (novels) and a strategic approach through storytelling would be required. Especially, since the classical novel contents tend to be consumed through signification with the original texts, the recommendation algorithm should be designed, considering a deep understanding based on contents and the users’ reading to enjoy them. Second, it is necessary to discover metadata based on the main character of contents and the interpretation of users to prepare the logical causality of reception and increase accessibility to classical novel contents by diversifying consumption lines. Through this, classical novel contents will be able to form a deep consumption line on a new road of enjoying them, breaking from periodic dramas or specific genres. Third, to open the future of classical novels, new research directions and approaches are required, breaking from the existing frame, considering the rapidly changing forms of the production, distribution, and consumption of media contents. The accessibility and responsiveness to classical novels would further increase by developing a micro-genre of classical novel and performing the curation of similar contents, along with discussions on reconstruction of categories of classics.
