‘분노’의 공(公)과 사(私): 최서해 소설의 ‘분노’의 기원과 공사(公私)인식을 중심으로 (Both Sides of Anger : The Origin of Anger and the Clear Distinction Between Public and Private Matters in Choi Seohae’s Fictions in Mid-1920’s)

초록

최서해의 소설사적 위상과 가치에 대해서는 많은 연구와 비평이 이루어져왔지만, 그의 작품이 신경향파문학의 소설사적 가능성 및 한계와 운명을 같이 한다는 임화의 평가가 가장 일반적인 중평(衆評)이라고 할 수 있다. 최서해의 소설을 둘러싼 기왕의 연구와 비평이 일군 성과는 그 나름으로 충분히 의미가 있는 것이지만, 이 글은 기존의 해석과는 다른 맥락과 관점에서 최서해의 소설을 재독(再讀)하고자 한다. 이 글이 제시하는 재해석의 가장 중요한 키워드는 ‘분노’이다. 이 글이 최서해 소설에 나타나는 ‘분노’에 다시 주목하는 이유는, ‘분노’가 최서해의 1920~30년대 소설을 관통하는 가장 지배적인 정조(情調)라는 점은 누구나 동의하면서도, 그것이 항상 가난과 억압을 묘사하기 위한 후경(後景)이나 전조(前兆)로서만 다루어질 뿐, ‘분노’가 그의 소설에서 차지하는 서사적 기능과 의미에 대해 충분히 검토되어 오지 않았기 때문이다. 또한, ‘분노’의 야기(惹起)와 해소를 둘러싼 인과관계가 거의 대부분 ‘가난’에만 초점을 두고 해석되어온 탓에, 그의 소설에서 ‘분노’가 촉발되고 점증(漸增)되는 또 다른 맥락과 이유들이 제대로 논의되어 오지 않았다는 점도 이유로 제시될 수 있다. ‘분노’를 둘러싼 연구와 비평의 이러한 공백을 메우고, ‘분노’를 중심으로 최서해 소설을 재해석하기 위해 이 글은 다음과 같은 논의들을 전개하고자 한다. 첫째, 최서해 소설에서의 ‘분노’가 소설사 및 비평사에서 논의되어 온 ‘배제’의 논리에는 ‘감정’과 ‘이성’을 분리하고 ‘이성’을 ‘감정’의 우위에 두는 위계적 논리구조가 작동하고 있다. 그러나, 최서해 소설의 ‘분노’의 인과 관계를 섬세하게 재구성하면, ‘분노’는 단순히 주관적 감정의 분출이 아니라, 이성적 판단과 사유의 결과로 촉발된 것임을 확인할 수 있다. 둘째, 그보다 좀 더 중요한 것은, 최서해 소설의 ‘분노’가, 지금까지의 통설처럼 주인공 및 그 주변 인물들의 가난과 억압 때문만이 아니라, 인륜적 가치와 공동체적 윤리가 파괴된 현실에 대한 절망으로부터 비롯되는 부분이 크다는 사실이다. 이 문제는 작가 최서해의 ‘공/사(公/私)’인식과도 연결되는 것으로, 그의 소설에는 유가(儒家)사상 특유의 ‘공/사’인식이 지배적인 형태로 구성되어 있어, 그 두 범주의 합리적 상호 작용과 변증법적 통일에 이르는 ‘출구’를 찾지 못하는 주인공의 절망적 상황 인식이 곳곳에 드러나 있으며, 이것이 ‘분노’의 또 다른 이유가 되고 있음을 확인하게 된다. 한편, 최서해 소설의 이러한 ‘공/사’인식의 특징은, 경향소설을 포함한 근대 한국소설이 안고 있는 소설 내 인물의 ‘변모’ 또는 ‘변신’과 관련된 독특한 ‘크로노토프’를 구성하게 된다는 점에서, 그의 소설이 지닌 또 다른 개성과 특징으로 지목할 수 있다. 요약하건대, 최서해는 소설사의 해석 관행을 넘어서서, 그의 소설적 개성과 특징을 새로운 관점에서 재해석할 여지가 아직도 많으며, 그러한 재해석의 한 가능성으로서, 이 글은 ‘분노’와 연관된 그의 사유구조와 소설 구성원리를 재구(再構)해 보기로 한다.

영어초록

In this paper, I try to reread and reinterpret Choi Seohae’s fictions in mid-1920’s. The key word which I suggest for rereading his works is “Anger”. As we know, Choi Seohae(hereafter Seohae) was one of the most impressive writer in the mid-1920’s and there were many good pieces of research in the value of his fiction. Although most literary historians evaluate the uniqueness and originality of Seohae’ fiction, but they are used to overlap it with the achievement and limitation of the “New Tendency Fiction” in 1920’s. In other words, most critics and literary historians repute that the value of Soehae‘s fiction shared with the fate of “New Tendency Novel”. As Im Hwa said, it is universally admitted that Soehae‘s fiction was the literary in transition period from outdated form to new proletarian literature. I regard it as appropriate, but I think it is not enough to prove the another meaning and value of his works.
The first thing I would like to suggest in this paper is the cause of ‘anger’ in his fiction. So far, most critics found the cause of ‘anger’ from the extreme poverty and repressive condition with which the characters faced. I also agree that “extreme poverty” and “repressive condition” are the most important reasons of “anger”, but we can find many other reasons to cause the ‘anger’ in his fiction through the intensive reading. The protagonists in his works often in the end they flew into a rage because they were seized by deep despair. The ‘anger’ and the deep ‘despair’ is like the both sides of nickle in his story. His protagonists are deprived of basic human conditions such as food and shelter. They endure in frustration. When their patience reaches the limit, however, their anger and fury explode like a volcano. And their fury finds its expression in arson and murder. That was a typical procedure in his works.
But, I argue that more fundamental reason of ‘anger’ is not only based on the extreme ‘poverty’ and repressive ‘condition’, but inhuman world without consideration and sympathy. In this case, ‘anger’ is no more a sort of emotion, rather, it has relation with rationality. On the other hand, we can assume that the probable cause of ‘anger’ is based on his idea of the public and private matters. Soehae had a traditional dichotomy based on Confucianism between the public and private matters . Many protagonists in Soehae’s novel were experiencing stress due to conflicts with the difficulty of the determination; which is the first thing between the public matter or private matter. Soehae could not find the appropriate solution for the conflict. Because the family(especially there mother) of protagonists always shackled the protagonists’ decision to take part in the revolutionary movement. Two senses of duty, one is to care for his own family and the other is to dedicate to revolutionary movement, always make big trouble to important characters in his novel. The ‘anger’, often, resulted from this ironical situation. I think that this contradiction reflects not only Soehae’s own limitation, but the condition of transitional period. At that time, while the traditional thought about the relationship between the individual and society or the public and private matters was gone, new idea imported from Europe was not established yet.
