초록

이태준은 1930년대 성북동이라는 교외의 변화 및 인정세태와 풍속의 다양한 양상을 소재로 한 다수의 소설과 수필을 썼으며 그 구체적 재현의 질과 양에 있어서 독보적이었다. 그는 성북동에 거주하고 있는 어리숙한 빈민과 반편 등의 친밀한 주민이 급속한 도시화에 따라 도태될 운명에 처해 있는 상황에 대해 안타까움을 토로했다. 한편으로 그의 소설은 문화주택에 거주하고 있는 속물적 인간상에 대한 냉소적 시각을 유지했다. 전자에 대한 애착은 고완품에 대한 이태준 자신의 각별한 의미 부여와 무관하지 않았다. 그런 만큼 몇몇의 수필에서 성북동의 풍경과 사물을 고완품으로 간주하고자 하는 생각을 드러내기도 했다. 그러한 관점은 결국 단편 「장마」에서 수연산방에 거주하는 소설가 자신과 가족 전체로 향하게 되었다. 이 소설에서 소설가와 가족은 오랜 장마 속에 녹과 곰팡이 슬어가며 운무 속에 앞을 내다볼 수 없는, 도시화․세속화의 시류로부터 낙오되거나 의식적으로 거리를 두는 존재로 묘사된다. 스스로를 포함한 성북동의 주민들에 대한 이와 같은 관점은 그러나 식민지 조선의 대도시 경성으로 출퇴근하는 교외 주택민 즉 도시의 생활인으로서의 감각으로부터 연유한 위계질서와 미적 거리에 의해 가능해진 것이다. 그것은 일반적으로 시골이나 전원으로만 간주되던 성북동을 다양한 부류의 주민이 유입된 신흥 주거지로서의 변모에 주목하도록 했다. 이태준의 소설과 수필에서 성북동은 민간업자들에 의해 불수의적으로 조성된 시골이면서 도시이고, 도시도 시골도 아닌 비동시적인 것의 동시성의 공간으로 재발견된다. 이태준 자신의 의도와는 별개로 그것이 성북동이라는 교외에 복합적으로 공존하고 있었던 과거와 현재, 시골과 도시, 정지와 변화의 양쪽 모두 및 그 사이의 간극을 부지불식간 의식하도록 한다. 그리고 후자로부터 전자로 소급하고자 하는 상상적 단절과 거리가 시차(時差/視差)를 발생시키고 있었다. 이태준은 성북동의 “구석진 곳”에서 역사적 유효성을 상실했거나 앞으로 그렇게 될 것(죽음)임에 틀림없는 옛 도성에 비친 석양으로 비유되는 자기동일성의 세계에 천착하는 방향으로 나아갔다. 그러나 그것은 애초 소멸과 파국의 운명을 내포한 것이었다.

영어초록

Lee Tae-Jun wrote many short stories and essays based on various aspects of the change and recognition status and customs of the suburbs of Seongbuk–dong in the 1930’s and was unique in the quality and quantity of the concrete representation. He expressed regret over the situation in which intimidated people, such as the poor and the fool, living in Seongbuk-dong, are destined to be culled by rapid urbanization. On the one hand, his short story maintained a cynical view of the snobbery of living in the Culture home. The attachment to the former was related to his specific making meaning for the traditional antique. As such, he have expressed his desire to consider the landscape and objects of Seongbuk-dong as a kind of the antique from some essays. Such a view turned to the writer himself and his entire family living in his home, Suyeonsanbang in the short story “Rainy”. In this short story, the writer and his families were portrayed as individuals rusting and gathering moldy in the long rainy season. or put conscious distances from urbanism or secularization, which can not be overlooked. This view of the inhabitants of Seongbuk-dong including themselves was made possible by the hierarchy and aesthetic distinction derived from the sense of life as a living citizen of the suburban that used to commute to Seoul. It focused on historical changes of Seongbuk-dong, which was generally regarded only as countryside or rural, as a new residential area with various types of individuals. In Lee Tae-Jun’s short stories and essays, Seongbuk-dong was historically suburb was built by private builders, and was rediscovered as the space of the  contemporaneity of the uncontemporary. Seongbuk-dong was neither rural nor city, but rural and city. Apart from his own intentions, he intended to unwittingly recognize the parallax gap and between the past and present, rural and urban, mountainous and secular, stopping and changing both of which coexisted in the suburbs of Seongbuk-dong. Imaginary breaks and distances to former from the latter were causing parallax gap. Lee Tae-Jun went to the world of self-identity, which is likened to the sunset of the old rampart, which must have been historically invalid or deeply in the recesses of Seongbuk-dong. But it was the destiny of destruction and destruction.
