This essay is a study about the interrelation between Friedrich Schlegel’s musical aesthetics and E. T. A. Hoffmann’s review of Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
Schlegel’s aesthetics are based on his hope for creating a ‘new’ myth, which is to evolve as the centre of society and art in the ‘new’ era. Schlegel’s “progressive universal poetry” proclaims an ideal which is valid for all art forms. He does not only demand the unification of all art forms and sciences, but also an internal structure reflecting the universal world.
In absolute music Schlegel finds the unity of all arts as well as the internal structure arising from the unification of its transcendental and mathematical characteristics, where the eternal course of creation, the dynamic combination of individual elements and the gradual approach to the infinite and absolute take place. Here he sees the character and internal structure which he demands of “progressive universal poetry” and ultimately, also of the ‘new’ myth. Schlegel regards absolute music as the most ideal medium for realizing his “progressive universal poetry” and creating his ‘new myth’.
E. T. A. Hoffmann’s review of Beethoven's 5th Symphony finally connects the Romantic aesthetics of music, which up to his time only remainedin a metaphysical space, with musical reality. This study shows that Hoffmann is influenced by Schlegel’s idea of “progressive universal poetry”. In this work of Beethoven Hoffmann finds the internal structure reflecting the vivid organic natural world, which spurs on the recipient's spirit incessantly and gradually lets him approach the absolute, although never stopping the course of creation. So, in this work of absolute music Hoffmann sees what Schlegel expects of his “progressive poetry” and indeed the essence of absolute music as such.
