초록

이 논문은 율곡의 철학을 이해하는 틀인 ‘이기지묘(理氣之妙)’를 통해 율곡의 몸에 대한 인식을 재고해보고 교육적 의미를 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 율곡은 이(理)와 기(氣)의 역할을 재고함으로써 각각의 고유성과 상보성을 인정했으며 이러한 관점은 ‘이기지묘’에 대한 심도 있는 해석으로 발전했다. 율곡의 이기지묘에 대한 이해는 수단적 가치를 넘어서는 몸의 의미를 발견했으며, 그의 교육관에 깊이를 더하는 요소로써 몸에 주목하게 했다. 율곡의 몸 인식은 몸이 이와 기의 묘합인 소우주로 세계와 동일한 이(理)를 지니고 있다는 전제에서 출발했다. 율곡은 몸을 본질로써의 이(理)가 현상으로써의 기(氣)와 만나 효과적으로 발현될 수 있는 지각의 기초이자 마음을 담는 집이라 인식했다. 이러한 관점을 통해 몸이 지식의 추구과정에서 감각기관으로써 중요한 역할을 하며 마음과의 관계에 있어서 수단적 가치에 그치는 것만은 아님을 시사한다. 그런 까닭에 마음과 몸의 관계맺음은 마음교육과 몸교육이 동시에 일어나는 활동임을 강조하고 이를 위해서는 반드시 수렴(收斂)을 통한 교육이 수반되어야 함을 강조한다. 그런데 이러한 수렴을 통한 교육은 진리만을 탐구하는 지적 추구활동으로 한정되는 것은 아니며 일상의 시간과 공간에서 이루어지는 소학 교육을 통해 이루어질 수 있는 것임을 강조한다. 즉, 율곡의 이기지묘적 관점은 몸이라는 기제가 교육에서 주목받아야 하는 필연성을 일상이라는 시간적․공간적 요소와의 관계성 속에서 설명하며, 이는 곧 습관의 형성이라는 의미획득 과정으로 연결지을 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to look into the awareness of human body and its educational implications based on the principle of ‘Yi-Gi-Ji-Myo(理氣之妙)’, the philosophical foundation of Yulgok, who recognized the uniqueness and mutual complement of Yi (理, reason, logic, justice) and Gi(氣, vitality, force, utility), which has led into the in-depth study into and interpretation of ‘Yi-Gi-Ji-Myo’. Yulgok’s understanding of Yi-Gi-Ji-Myo went beyond its instrumental value and found the meaning of human body and took note of the human body as a factor that deepens his view of education. Yulgok’s awareness of human body proceeded from the premise that our body is the microcosm, a delicate combination of Yi and Gi with Yi(理) equal to the world. Yulgok recognized the human body as the basis of awareness and a house that contains spirit that can be effectively manifested by a combination of Yi(理) as essence and Gi(氣) as phenomenon. This point of view implies that a human body is more than just an important sensory organ and instrumental value in terms of its relations with spirit from both physical and mental perspectives. This is why he emphasized that the formation of relationships between spirit and body is an activity of educating both spirit and body simultaneously, which requires convergence training of our body and spirit in harmony. He also emphasized, however, that the education through convergence training is not restricted to the intellectual activity in pursuit of truth and that it can be accomplished through the education of Sohak (Minor Learning) that is conducted in time and space of everyday living. That is, the Yulgok’s philosophy from the perspective of Yi-Gi-Ji-Myo explains the necessity of our mechanism of physical body that needs to be highlighted in education is explained within the context of the relationship between time and spatial elements of everyday life and that it is associated with the process of acquiring a meaningful factor, that is, the formation of a habit.
