초록

이 논문은 문학적인 측면에서 고문서를 연구하는 방법과 콘텐츠 제작 사례를 구체적으로 보여주는 것이 목적이다. 고문서 스토리텔링 방법론을 적용하여 ‘노비로 팔려간 곱덕이의 도망’이라는 원천이야기를 복원해 내는 과정을 보여주고, 이렇게 만들어진 ‘곱덕이 이야기’가 ‘원천소재(源泉素材)’로 활용되어 다양한 콘텐츠로 제작된 사례를 소개하였다. 고문서는 1차적으로는 역사 연구의 기초자료이지만 그 속에는 이야기의 핵심 요소인 인물, 사건, 배경 등이 포함되어 있다. 고문서를 바탕으로 하고 여기에 적당한 상상력을 더하면 민간의 삶을 알 수 있는 이야기, 생생한 사람 사는 이야기가 만들어 질 수 있다.
고문서를 소재로 이야기를 만들기 위해서는 먼저 준비단계에서 탈초(脫草), 정서(正書), 번역 등의 과정을 필수적으로 거쳐야 하고 예비단계에서 고문서 연구방법론을 적용하여 고문서를 꼼꼼히 읽어야 한다. 이때 낱장의 고문서를 서사의 조각으로 보고 이를 연결하여 한 편의 이야기를 복원해 내는데, 이 과정에서 고문서의 빈틈에 문학적인 상상력을 첨가한다. 그 다음에 인과관계에 따라 스토리와 사건을 재배열하여 서사를 구성하고, 한 편의 이야기가 만들어지면 거기에 숨겨진 의미를 찾아내고 내용에 의미를 부여한다. ‘노비로 팔려간 곱덕이의 도망’은 일련의 고문서 스토리텔링 과정을 다섯 단계로 구분하여 서술하였다. ‘달아난 노비 곱덕과 그 후일담’에서는 오재삼(吳再三) 수기(手記)와 오생원댁(吳生員宅) 호구단자(戶口單子)를 통해 ‘평민이었던 곱덕이가 노비로 팔려갔지만 5년 뒤에 달아났고 끝까지 잡히지 않았다’는 이야기의 처음과 끝을 복원해 내었다. 다음 ‘셋째 딸 곱덕을 노비로 판 아비 최봉’에서는 곱덕이가 어떤 사정으로 오생원 집으로 팔려오게 되었는지를 최봉(崔峯) 명문(明文)을 기반으로 추적해 보았다. 그 다음 ‘곱덕 매매와 관련된 이중계약서’에서는 오생원 집에서 제출한 입안(立案)에 포함된 최곳대(崔古叱大) 명문이 앞의 최봉 명문과 마찬가지로 곱덕의 매매문서인데도 곱덕 아버지의 이름, 매매 사유와 가격, 수결(手決) 등에서 차이가 있음을 밝혔고 수결의 형태와 최봉의 처지를 고려하여 최봉 명문이 실제 매매 당시에 작성된 문서일 것으로 판단하였다. 그 다음 ‘곱덕 매매문서에 숨겨진 이야기’에서는 한 달 간격으로 이중계약서가 작성되었고 곱덕의 도망에 대한 책임을 거래 당시 보증인이었던 오재삼에게 추궁한 사실로 볼 때, 그가 중간에서 농간을 부린 것을 알 수 있었다. ‘곱덕에 관한 나머지 이야기’에서는 오생원 집안의 호구단자에 있는 도망 노비 명단을 근거로 큰 언니 상덕이 어린 동생을 데리고 도망갔을 가능성을 제시하였다.
노비로 팔려간 곱덕이의 도망’이라는 고문서 원천소재는 동화, 소설, 웹툰, 드라마 콘텐츠로 활용되었다. 동화에서는 곱덕을 똑똑하고 용감한 13살 아이로 형상화해서 탈출을 계획하고 실행에 옮기는 모습을 보여주었고, 소설은 조선시대 노비로 팔려 간 소녀의 고달픈 삶이 결혼 이주 여성의 정착 과정과 혼합되는 스토리로 구성되었다. 웹툰에서는 카카오톡 메신저 형식을 사용해서 역사적인 소재를 대화로 풀어나갔는데 댓글을 통해 독자들의 뜨거운 반응을 살필 수 있었다. 역사드라마는 원천소재의 서사를 기반으로 연출되었지만 해설이나 자료 화면이 삽입되고 인물이나 사건에 변형을 가하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the method of studying old documents and examples of content production in terms of literature precisely. It shows the process of restoring the original story of ‘The Flight of Gopdeok Sold as a Slave’ by applying old documents’ storytelling methodology and introduces the cases in which ‘Gopdeok’s Story’ made in this way is used as ‘source material’ to produce various contents. Old documents are primarily basic data for historical research; however, they include the key elements of a story, for instance, characters, events, and the background. If we add an appropriate amount of imagination to the ground of an old document, we can create stories about the people’s lives vividly.
In order to make an old document into a story, it is essential to go through talcho (脫草; changing cursive characters into handwritten letters), reading intensively, and translation in the preparation stage, and it is needed to read it thoroughly by applying the methodology of studying old documents in the preliminary stage. At this time, each piece of the old document is viewed as a piece of the narrative to restore a story in combination, and in this process, literary imagination is added to the gap that is present in it. Next, the stories and events are rearranged according to the causality to form a narrative, and when a piece of story is created, you will find the meaning hidden in it and give meaning to the contents. ‘The Flight of Gopdeok Sold as a Slave’ is described as a series of processes found in old documents’ storytelling are divided into five steps. In ‘the Flight of Slave Gopdeok and Recollections’, Oh Jae-sam’s memoirs and the hogudanja (戶口單子) of Saengwon Oh’s wife are used to restore the beginning and ending of the story that ‘Gopdeok who was once a commoner was sold as a slave but ran away in five years and never got caught after all’. Next, in ‘Father Choi Bong who sold his third daughter, Gopdeok, as a slave’ the reason why Gopdeok was sold to Saengwon Oh’s family was tracked down based on Choi Bong’s myeongmun (明文). Next, in ‘the Double Contract Related to the Sale of Gopdeok’, it is revealed that although Choi Got-dae’s myeongmun included in the plan submitted from Sangwon Oh’s family is the document about the sale of Gopdeok just like Choi Bong’s myeongmun mentioned earlier, there are differences in the name of Gopdeok’s father, reason for the sale, price, and sugeol (手決), and it is assumed that Choi Bong’s myeongmun must have been the document actually written at the time of the sale in consideration of the form of sugeol or Choi Bong’s circumstances. Next, in ‘the Story Hidden in the Document of Gopdeok’s Sale’, we can see that a double contract was written a month later, and the fact that Oh Jae-sam, the guarantor at the time of the transaction, was pressed on responsibility for Gopdeok's flight shows that he played a trick in the middle. In ‘the Remaining Stories about Gopdeok’, grounded on the list of fugitive slaves in the hogudanja of Saengwon Oh’s family, it suggests the possibility that eldest sister Sangdeok ran away with her younger sister.
The source material of the old document, ‘the Flight of Gopdeok Sold as a Slave’, has been used to produce fairy tale, novel, webtoon, or drama contents. The fairy tale depicts Gopdeok as a smart and brave 13-year-old child planning and implementing her escape, and the novel is organized with a story that the miserable life of a girl who was sold as a slave in Joseon is combined with the settling process of a married migrant woman. In the webtoon, the Kakao Talk messenger format is adopted to unravel the historical material through conversation, and we can see enthusiastic response from readers through their comments. Historical dramas were directed based on the narrative of the original material, but commentaries or data screens were inserted, and either characters or events were modified.
