초록

More than one century ago, Western missionaries came to Chosun Korea and opened Western-style schools here and there. This was the beginning of the so-called ‘modern education’ in this land.
This essay aims to explore what the educational orientation of modern schools was, through studying the educational thought of William Baird,who established Soongsil University in Pyeng Yang in 1897. For this study, it is necessary to compare Baird's philosophy of ‘education of life'with the traditional dominant Confucian education at that time.
These days, some thinking Koreans are critical of our education,especially our established college education. In this essay, I argue, our education is a part of the so-called triangular social order along with state and market. Therefore, our education is, by, for and of this triangular social order.
This essay discusses the problems of our education and our university,through examining the critical thought of Kim Yesul, who declared ‘the death’ of our university education and ‘left with no regret’ her university in the year of 2010 dreaming of ‘education of life’. This essay, I hope, calls for a ‘voice of hope’ in this ruined, hopeless land by the triangular social order of political power, economic power and intellectual power.
