‘흥미’에 대한 이해와 실천: 유아교사들의 오해와 혼란, 그리고 갈등 (Understandings and practices about children’s interest: Early childhood teachers’ misunderstandings, confusion, and conflicts)

본 연구는 아동중심 교육의 핵심적 요소라고 할 수 있는 ‘흥미’에 대해 유아교사들이 어떻게 생각하고 있으며 교실 실천에 흥미를 반영하는 방식은 어떠한지 알아보는 것을 목적으로하였다. G광역시의 어린이집에 근무하는 교사 3명이 연구에 참여하였으며 연구의 자료는 심층면담과 교실관찰을 통해 수집되었다. 연구 결과 참여교사들은 흥미를 단순한 관심이나 즐거움으로 여기면서도, 진정한 흥미를 구분하고 가치의 측면에서 보다 깊이 있는 이해를 보이는 등 복합적인 모습을 보였다. 또한 유아들의 진정한 흥미를 교육실천에 반영하는 것의 어려움을 토로하며, 학습과 흥미를 분리해서 바라보았다. 따라서 흥미는 학습목표 달성을 위해사용하는 수단으로 간주되었고 이러한 인식은 그들의 교실 실천에도 그대로 반영되어 특정전략들을 사용하여 재미와 즐거움의 차원에서 유아들의 흥미를 심어주려 애쓰고 있음을 알수 있었다.

영어초록

This study aims to explore how early childhood teachers understand the conception of children’s interest, and how their understandings are reflected in their classroom practices. Three early childhood teachers in a child-care center in G metropolitan area participated in this study. To collect data, the researcher conducted two times of individual in-depth interviews and a group interview with them. In addition, the participant teachers’ classroom practices were observed about 12 times. The result of data analysis shows that the teachers regarded interest as curiosity and thought it in connection with excitement and enjoyment. At the same time, they pointed out some important educational values of children’s interest. It seems that they have multilayered understandings about interest. Also, they confessed some difficulties in applying children’s real interest into their classroom practices. The teachers thought of reflecting children’s interest as somewhat different from facilitating learning.
Separating children’s interest from learning, the participant teachers considered interest the means of learning and tried to arouse children’s interest in pre-planned activities. In order to do so, the teachers often used some specific strategies such as making up-coming activities confidential, inserting funny elements in activities, and partially integrating children’s wishes into activities. These results suggest the necessity of providing pre/in-service early childhood teachers with diverse opportunities to understand more detailed conceptions about interest and expanding discussions about the ways of connecting interest with learning.
