초록

김경동 교수는 1936년 경북 안동에서 태어났다. 이온죽 교수와의 사이에 두 따님을 두고 있다. 그는 서울대학교 사회학과와 대학원을 졸업했다. 미국 코넬대학교에서 박사학위를 취득하였다. 1977년 서울대 사회학과 교수로 부임하여 2002년 정년퇴직하였다. 김경동 교수의 생애와 학문을 조명하면서 확인할 수 있는 것은 ‘성(誠)’이다. 성실함이야말로 지상 사물과 현상의 ‘끝과 처음(終始)’이다. 그래서 ‘성실하려고 최선을 다하는’ 삶의 태도와 지향은 가장 존귀하다. 그는 평생에 걸쳐 그 어떤 일을 수행하든 성실하게 최선을 다하였다.
한 시대를 가르는, 그야말로 epoch-making한 이 현대의 사회학(박영사) 저서 밑바탕엔 ‘인간주의 사회학(humanist sociology) 내지 인간주의적 철학및 사상이 자리잡고 있다. 1978년에 함께 출간했던 인간주의 사회학(민음사)에 이러한 철학 및 사상이 잘 드러나고 있다. 1970년대 말에 간행된이 두 저서 이외에 그가 평생을 두고 연구하며 펼쳐낸 저작 모두의 근저에는 인간주의 사회학의 가치지향이 깃들어 있다. 유학의 선비들이 지향하는 학문을 일컬어 인간주의적 사유체계, 실천적인 인간학이라고 할 수있듯이 김경동 교수의 사회학 또한 인간주의 사회학에 기초한 실천적 인간학이라고 볼 수 있다. 인간의 존재됨과 사회의 본질적 성격에 대해 ’절문근사(切問近思‘)하면서 참된 자아를 추구하고 타자를 완성시키려고 하는것이 인간주의 사회학의 과제이다. 그는 젊은 연구자 시절부터 이러한 ’절문근사‘의 태도로써 그에게 주어진 사회학적 소명을 인간주의 사회학의 ’사회학적 관심‘으로 탐구하고 저술해냈던 것이다.
김경동 교수는 2022년 선비문화의 빛과 그림자(박영사)란 대작을 출간했다. 이 방대한 역저(力著)를 통하여, 조선시대 선비들과 그 철학사상, 선비문화의 형성과정 및 특성, 현대적 계승 문제 등을 논의하고 있다. ‘글을 읽고 지식을 쌓아 전파하며 실천하는 지식인’으로서 선비와 그 문화, 지식인의 권력 및 파워엘리트 등을 중심으로 개념 및 분석틀을 마련하고 있다. 그 분석 프레임을 통해 다음과 같은 핵심 주제들을 다룬다.
문명사적 대전환의 충격에서 선비문화의 요청, 조선시대 선비문화의 철학적 담론, 조선시대 선비의 이상적 인간상=수기(修己)의 철학과 실천지침, 선비의 이상적 세계관과 정치.경제.사회사상 및 활동, 조선시대 파워엘리트의 선비문화, 시대정신으로서의 새로운 선비문화 등을 탐색하고 연구 분석하였으며 나아가 선비문화와 인류의 미래를 전망하고 있다. 나아가 복합적인 위기 및 위험, 세기적인 구조변동의 대전환 속에서 우리 사회가 지향해야 할 바람직한 사회적 가치 및 규범 체계와 문화를 제시하고 있다. 선비와 선비문화의 렌즈를 통해 조선시대를 새롭게 야심적으로, 사회과학적으로 통합적 관점에서 분석. 성찰하고 있는 문제작이자 대작이다.

영어초록

Professor Kim Kyong-Dong was born in 1936 in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province. He has two daughters with Professor Lee Onjuk. He graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in sociology. He earned his doctorate from Cornell University in the United States. In 1977, he was appointed as a professor of sociology at Seoul National University and retired in 2002. What can be confirmed by shedding light on Professor Kim Kyong-Dong's life and learning is "faithfulness(誠)". Faithfulness is the "end and first" of things and phenomena on the world. Therefore, the attitude and orientation of life 'doing my best to be sincere' are the most honorable. He did his best faithfully in whatever he did throughout his life.
Underlying this book, "Modern Sociology(Pakyoungsa)", which is truly epoch-making, is "humanist sociology," or humanistic philosophy and ideas.
These philosophy and ideas are well revealed in the “Humanistic Sociology (Minumsa)”, which was published together in 1978. In addition to these two books published in the late 1970s, the basis of both his lifelong research and work contains the value orientation of humanistic sociology. Professor Kim Kyong-Dong's sociology can also be seen as a practical anthropology based on humanistic sociology, as it can be said to be a humanistic system of thought and practical anthropology. The task of humanistic sociology is to pursue the true self and complete the other person while 'interpretation approximation' about the existence of human beings and the essential nature of society. Since his youth as a researcher, he has explored and authored the sociological calling given to him as a "social interest" in humanistic sociology.
Professor Kim Kyong-Dong published a masterpiece titled "The Light and Shadow of Seonbi Culture(선비문화)" in 2022. Through this vast station book, it discusses its philosophical ideas, the formation process and characteristics of scholar culture, and modern succession issues with scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. As an "intellectuals who read, accumulate, spread, and practice writing", a concept and analysis framework is being established focusing on scholars, their culture, the power of intellectuals, and power elites. The analysis frame addresses the following key topics.
In the shock of the great transformation of civilization, the request of scholar culture, philosophical discourse of scholar culture during the Joseon Dynasty, ideal human image of scholar during the Joseon Dynasty = philosophy and practice guidelines of Sugi(修己), ideal worldview and politics of scholar. It explores and analyzes economic and social ideas and activities, the Seonbi culture of the Joseon Dynasty's power elite, and the new Seonbi culture as the spirit of the times, and further predicts the future of Seonbi culture and humanity. Furthermore, it presents a desirable social value and normative system and culture that our society should pursue in the great transformation of complex crises, risks, and century structural changes.
Analysis of the Joseon Dynasty from an ambitious and socio-scientific perspective through the lens of Seonbi and Seonbi culture. It's a problem piece and a masterpiece that I'm reflecting on.
