오순절 운동의 어제, 오늘, 그리고 내일 (Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow of Pentecostalism)

초록

오순절 운동은 20세기에 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 개신교 운동 중 하나다. 존 웨슬리이후, 성령세례에 대한 신학 논쟁이 성결운동의 탄생을 가져왔고, 결국 오순절 운동의출현으로 이어졌다. 복음을 전하기 위한 권능의 부여로서 성령세례, 그것의 가시적증거로서 방언을 강조한 오순절 운동은 1906년 아주사거리 부흥운동을 통해미국 전역과 전 세계로 확장되었고, 하나님의 성회를 포함한 수많은 교단들이 탄생했다. 이 운동은 1960년대에 성공회와 루터교 같은 주류 교단으로 지평이 확장되었고, 1990년대에는 토론토 블레싱 같은 “제3의 물결”로 이어졌다. 2000년대에 출현하여논쟁의 대상이 된 신사도 개혁운동도 이런 운동의 또 다른 변형이다.
현재 오순절 운동은 북미, 남미, 아프리카, 아시아, 그리고 유럽 등 세계 전역으로확장되었고, 가장 왕성하게 활동하며 성장하는 개신교 운동이 되었다. 특히 남미에서는가톨릭에 대등한 세력으로, 아프리카에서는 이슬람과 경쟁하는 종교로 급성장했으며, 아시아와 유럽에서는 비교적 열세를 보이지만 주목할 만한 성취도 함께나타나고 있다. 한편, 오순절 운동의 동향에 대해 우려하는 목소리도 존재한다. 급속한세계화 속에, 아프리카와 남미에서 오순절 운동이 번영신학으로 경도되는 현상이나타나고 있으며, 아프리카에서는 과도한 토착화 때문에 오순절 운동의 정통성에 대한 의혹이 제기되고 있다. 또한 유럽에서는 세속화 현상이 더욱 심화되면서,오순절 운동의 미래에 대해 암울한 진단이 계속 나타나고 있다.
이런 관점에서, 한국 오순절 운동도 중요한 전환점에 처해 있다. 한국교회의 성장둔화는 오순절 운동에도 동일하게 나타나고 있다. 오순절 운동이 주류 종교로 성장하면서과거의 열정이 많이 식었다. 동시에, 양적 성장에 비해 사회적ㆍ정치적 책임을적절히 수행하지 못하고, 전통문화와의 창조적 만남이나 독창적 신학의 개발에도별다른 성과를 내지 못하고 있다. 결국, 자신의 고유한 정체성을 유지하면서, 이런현실적 문제를 얼마나 탁월하게 극복하는가에 따라 한국 오순절 운동의 미래는크게 달라질 것이다.

영어초록

Pentecost alism is one of the most signi ficant Protest ant movementsin the twentieth century. Under the influence of John Wesley, the theological debates on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit took place andfinally made a decisive i mpact on the bi r th of the Holi ness Movementin the nineteenth century and the Pentecostalism in the twentieth century. Pentecostalism, which stresses both the Baptism with the HolySpirit as the empowerment for service and the speaking in tonguesas its physical evidence, began to spread out throughout the UnitedStates of America and all over the world along with the Azusa StreetRevival in 1906, and as a result, a good many of Pentecostal denominations including the Assemblies of God came into being. This movement also jumped over the fence of the mainline churches such as the Episcopal Church and the Lutheran Church in the early 1960s andled to the so-called “the Third Wave” like the Toronto Blessing in the1990s. The New Apostolic Reformation is a new version of Pentecostal ism in the early twenty-first century.
Now, Pentecostalism is found in every continent and is regarded asthe most vital and fastest growing Protestant movement. In particular,it is rising up to be an equal force to the Catholic Church in LatinAmerica and the only religion competing with Islam in Africa. Andin Asia and Europe, one can find some remarkable achievements by Pentecostal churches in spite of their negative environments due tothe high degree of secularization.
At the same time, it is heard of some worrying voices regarding the current and future of Pentecostalism. In the middle of the rapid globalization, Pentecostalism in Africa and Latin America tend to be possessed by the so-called Prosperity Theology, and a serious debate on the theological nature of Pentecostalism is going on in Africa, for it seems to go astray due to the high degree of indigenization. In addition, the future of Pentecostalism in Europe is not bright because of the highly advanced secularization.
From this perspective, the Pentecostal Movement in Korea seems tobe also faced with a signi ficant t ur ni ng poi nt. The numer ical growthof Protest ant ism i n Korea al ready stopped, and one can find the samesymptom in the Pentecostal churches. As the Pentecostal churchesgrew to be one of the mainliners, it lost its own powerful passionwith which it could enjoy such a remarkable growth in the past. Atthe same time, it fails to carry out its sociopolitical responsibilities asmuch as it should, and to meet creatively with the traditional cultures,or to make a contribution to developing a Korean-Pentecostal theology in this country. After all, there is no doubt that the future of the Pentecostalism in Korea depends on whether or not it can successfully overcome those critical issues while faithful to its original identity.
