국내 인문·사회과학계의 니클라스 루만 연구: 수용 추이, 현황 및 과제 (Study on Niklas Luhmann in Korea: Research Trends, Issues, and Challenges)

초록

구성론, 등가기능론, 자동생산, 탈인본주의의 발상을 통해 체계이론의 패러다임 전회를 이끈 니클라스 루만이 독일어권은 물론이요 북미, 남유럽, 동아시아 학계에서 학문적 르네상스를 맞고 있다. 루만이 제안한 복잡성, 우연성, 패러독스, 커뮤니케이션, 자동생산체계 등은 정보화, 세계화, 생태계 위기와 같은 오늘의 현안을 읽어내고 진단하며 문제 해법을 모색하는 데 유용한 분석틀로 활용될 수 있을 것이라는 기대 때문이다. 더불어, 사회과학, 인문학, 자연과학, 예술 분야의 의제들을 아우르는 루만의 체계이론은 융합과 통섭이라는 학문 세계의 새로운 시대정신을 인도하고 체현하는 ‘거대이론’으로 자리매김하고 있다. 지난 20여 년 동안 한국 학계에서도 루만 이론을 연구의 소재와 논문의 주제로 삼는 시도가 활발하게 이루어져왔고 최근 들어 논의의 질적 수준 역시 제고되고 있다. 하지만 산출된 저작의 양에 비해 연구 분야의 다각화, 연구 콘텐츠의 확충, 관련 논의의 심화 발전 측면에서 분발의 여지도 적지 않다. 첫째, 루만의 이론적 관심사가 다양한 전공과 주제를 포괄하고 있는 만큼 국내의 루만 연구도 여러 학문 분야에서 두루 이루어지고 있지만 전공별 주된 관심사를 중심으로 루만의 관련 저작 또는 이에 대한 루만식 독법을 소개하는 차원의 것이 다수다. 둘째, 루만에 대한 유럽 학계의 관심이 전 학문 영역에 걸쳐 폭넓게 산포되어 있는 반면 국내의 연구관심은 사회학, 법학, 서양철학 등 일부전공 영역에, 그리고 학자 간 비교 연구와 같은 일부 논제에 편중되어 있다. 셋째, 연구자들 간 상호 토론과 비판이 부재하다. 통상적으로 연구의 성과와 이론 해석, 현실 쟁점에의 적용과 활용을 둘러싸고 활발한 토론과 비판 또는 검증이 이루어지면서 관련 논의가 심화 발전될 수 있는데 국내 논의에서는 일회적이고 일방향적인 독백형 연구가 압도적으로 많다. 넷째, 논의의 다수가 이론적 담론 전개에 머물고 있으며, 세계사회의 공간적 분절이라고 할 수 있는 한국 사회의 구체적 현실 진단이나 해석 또는 문제 해결에 적용되는 단계로까지 나아가지는 못하고 있다.

영어초록

A German sociologist Niklas Luhmann’s system theory, characterized by constructivism, equivalent functionalism, autopoiesis, and antihumanism and lead to paradigm shifts, is recently experiencing an academic renaissance not only in German-speaking regions, but also in North America, Southern Europe, and East Asia. Luhmann suggested complexity, contingency, paradox, communication, and autopoietic systems, and these are expected to be alternatives to the traditional ideas of causality, natural law and the social contract, subject and reason, rationality, and provide a lucrative framework not just for viewing and understanding today’s issues such as informatization, globalization, ecological crisis, but for solving various problems. Furthermore, his general systems theory - encompassing agendas of social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and arts - is emerging as the ‘super theory’ that can guide a new era of convergence and materialize the spirit of consilience in the academia. In the past two decades, the number of studies on Luhmann has grown, and the quality of discourse is also improving. Nonetheless, there are several important areas for improvement with respect to diversification of the research area, expansion of research content, and developing and deepening the discussions. First, although research on Luhmann has been conducted in various academic disciplines because his theory embraces numerous academic fields and topics, the vast majority of studies on Luhmann in Korea remains in mere introduction of his writings or interpretations related to the main interests of each discipline. Second, the research interest of Korean academia has been concentrated on some disciplines such as sociology, western philosophy, and law, or some topics such as comparative studies between Luhmann and other scholars, while European academia’s comprises humanities, language and literature, art etc. as well as social sciences. Third, there have not been sufficient discussions and critiques among Korean scholars who study Luhmann. In general, lively debates, criticism, and verifications on analysis results and theoretical interpretations as well as applications on the real issues can lead to the development of the discourse. Yet, the overwhelming number of past literature in Korea tend to be anecdotal and monologue-type. And this has become the limiting factor in developing and deepening academic discourse, research, and deriving practical implications. Finally, by remaining as a theoretical discourse, the majority of the discussion is not developing into in-depth analysis of the reality in Korean society.
