한일 독립영화계, 최초의 조우에서 초연결 시대 상호연계까지 (From the First Encounter to the Interconnection of the Hyperconnected Era between Korean and Japanese Independent Film Industry)

초록

한류 이전, 그리고 1998년의 일본대중문화개방이 있기 전부터 한일 영화계는나름의 교류를 해왔으며, 한일 독립영화계 또한 그 교류의 한 축을 이루어 왔다.
이미 1964년에 오시마 나기사가 한국을 방문해 한국 영화인들과 만났으며, 변영주 감독의 ≪낮은 목소리≫(1995)는 일본의 독립배급사를 통해 일본 극우 세력의 협박에도 불구하고 극장 개봉할 수 있었다. 그래서 본 논문은 그동안 주목받지못했던 독립영화에 초점을 맞춰 한일 영화교류를 주제로 조사, 연구한다. 이러한작업을 위해 먼저 한국과 일본 독립영화의 차이를 살펴보고, 한일 독립영화 교류의 시발점 및 전환점이 된 사례를 중심으로 연구한다.
1964년의 오시마 나기사의 사례에서부터 한국 독립영화 중 최초로 해외 배급을 했고 일본에서 개봉한 ≪낮은 목소리≫, 일본 독립영화에 한국 배우가 출연한 최초의 작품 ≪잠자는 남자≫(1996)을 비롯해 ≪한여름의 판타지아≫(2015), ≪최악의 하루≫(2016) 등 최근의 영화까지 훑어 내려간다. 한일 독립영화 교류는 일종의 연대감에서 시작되기도 했으며, 특정 목적을 위한 기획과 그 성과를내기 위해 이루어지기도 했다. 지속적으로 이루진 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우들도뒤섞여 있으며, 이는 사회정치적 상황에서 단절되거나 더욱 강하게 결속되어 이어오기도 했다. 이런 맥락에서 본 연구는 연계의 관점에서 한일 독립영화 교류를살펴본다. 그리고 합작 및 한일 배우 캐스팅 등의 사례뿐만 아니라 한국의 독립예술영화전용관과 일본의 미니시어터 간의 연대와 공동상영의 사례 또한 살펴본다.
이를 통해 한국과 일본 독립영화계의 연계를 통한 양국 독립영화의 확장 가능성을 타진한다. 그 가능성이란 공동제작 및 공동배급과 같은 산업적 연계와 확장을 넘어 텍스트와 그 의미, 그리고 수용의 확장 가능성을 포함하는 것으로, 초연결 시대라는 불리는 오늘날, 텍스트의 자유로운 이동과 변용에 관한 것이다.

영어초록

Before the hallyu(Korean wave) and furthermore, before the import of Japanese media was allowed in 1998, Korean and Japanese film industry had had their own exchanges, and Korean and Japanese independent film industry also formed an axis of the exchange. Already in 1964, Oshima Nagisa visited Korea and met with Korean filmmakers. Byun Youngju’s The Murmuring was able to be released theatrically through an independent Japanese distributor despite threats from the Japanese far-right organisaitions. Therefore, this study examines the history of exchanges focusing on independent films, which have not received much attention in the Korea-Japan film industry exchanges. For this work, I first examine the differences between Korean and Japanese independent films, and study the cases that became the starting point and turning point of the exchange between Korea and Japan.
From the case of Nagisa Oshima in 1964, I study The Murmuring, which was the first Korean independent film to be distributed overseas and released in Japan, and Sleeping Man(1996), the first Japanese film in which a Korean actor appeared, and also analyze recent Korean and Japanese independent films such as A Midsummer’s Fantasia(2015) and A Bad Hair Day(2016). The Korea-Japan independent film exchanges began in a kind of solidarity, and was also carried out to plan for a specific purpose and achieve its results. There are cases in which exchanges were continuous and cases in which they were not, and they were cut off in socio-political situations or more strongly bonded. In this context, this study examines the exchanges of independent film industries between Korea and Japan from the perspective of linkage. In addition, this study examines not only cases such as co-production, but also cases of mutual solidarity and co-screening between the association of independent & art film theaters in Korea and the association of mini-theaters in Japan in various ways.
Through this study, I explore the possibility of expanding independent films between Korea and Japan through the linkage between the independent film industry in Korea and Japan. The possibility means industrial linkage and expansion such as co-production and co-distribution, as well as including the possibility of expanding in texts and their meaning, and in the acceptance. It is also about the free transfer and transformation of texts in today’s hyperconnected era.
