전후 미국학계에 소개된 한국사 연구와 식민주의 역사학 (The Study of Korean History and Colonial Historiography in the United States Academia after the World War)

초록

2차 대전 이후 냉전 체제의 구축에 따라 동아시아 지역은 물론 냉전의 최전선인 한국에 대한 미국학계의 관심이 고조되었다. 1950년대 들어 미국의 대학에 동아시아를 연구하기 위한 연구소, 한국학 관련 강좌와 정규 교수직이 마련되고, Korean Studies Guide와 같이 한국 관련 문헌만을 대상으로 하는 문헌 목록집이 등장하는 것은 2차 대전 직후부터 미국학계에서 동아시아와 한국에 대한 관심이 상당했음을 보여준다. 특히, 영문 한국사 개설서가 거의 없었던 시절 영역·출간된 스에마쓰의 『朝鮮史のしるべ』(1936)와 하타다의 『朝鮮史』(1951)는 식민주의 역사학의 자장 속에 있다고 평가되는 저작이라는 점에서, 그것의 유입 및 확산의 경위, 그리고 이후 영역본이 출간되기에 이르는 과정에 주목할 필요가 있다. Korean Studies Guide와 그 집필진에 의해 미국학계에 알려진 이 두 책은 처음 소개되었을 당시부터, 그 영역본이 출간된 이후에도 상반된 평가를 받았다. A Short history of Korea는 영문으로 된 한국사 개설서가 없는 상황에서 교재, 참고자료로서 환영할만하다는 평가도 있었지만 “제국주의적 정치선전”이라는 혹평에 직면했던 반면 A History of Korea는 사회경제적 관점에 입각해 있을 뿐만 아니라 식민통치를 준엄한 비판의 자세에서 서술했기 때문에 신선하고 객관성을 담보한 한국사 개설서로 평가된 것이다.
실로 이 두 책은 그 서술과 구성에서 확연한 차이를 드러냈지만 전전 일본인 연구자들의 한국사 연구에 입각하여 한국사를 부정적으로 그린다는 점에서는 공통되었다. 사회경제적 관점에 입각한 하타다의 저작은, 한국사에 드러나는 생산 관계는 발전적 면모를 보이지만 조선 후기까지도 고대적 생산 관계가 중심이었다는, 과거 일본인 역사가들이 주장했던 봉건제 결여론과 맞닿아 있었다. 이러한 논의는 20세기 초반 일본인 연구자에 의해 처음 등장했을 당시부터 봉건제를 통하여 일본만이 근대화에 성공할 수 있던 원인을 찾던 것으로, 전후 미국학계에 등장했던 근대화론으로 연결될 수 있는 것이었다. 뿐만 아니라 두 책은 모두 한국에 미친 외세의 압박과 침략을 중요한 역사적 결절점으로 다루고 있는데, 이는 한국사의 타율성을 강조하는 것에 그치지 않고 일본사의 전개를 설명하는 것으로 귀결되었다. 한사군의 설치, 원구, 임진왜란이 그것으로, 이는 외세의 침략으로 고통받는 한국을 보여주는 것일 뿐만 아니라 섬나라 일본과 대륙의 역사적 관계를 드러내는 주요한 국면으로서 서술되었다. 이는 일본을 동아시아의 역사에 참여시켜 일본을 중심으로 하는 ‘동양’의 역사를 설명하고자 했던 전전 일본인 역사가들의 연구에 입각한 것이자 전후 동아시아에서 일본을 한 축으로 하여 미국의 패권과 국익을 관철하려던 미국의 정책과도 연결될 수 있는 것이었다.
결론적으로 A Short history of Korea와 A History of Korea는 한국사에 대한 정체성론과 타율성론에 입각해 있을 뿐만 아니라 한국사를 통해 일본과 대륙의 역사적 관계를 설명한다는 점에서 전전 일본인 역사가들의 시각에 충실한 한국사 개설서라 하겠다. 이들 책자가 영역되어 미국 사회에 유통될 수 있었던 것은 동아시아에서 일본을 정책적 파트너로 하여 이 지역의 안보와 미국의 국익을 관철하려 했던 미국의 정책이나 근대화론 등에 식민주의 역사학의 논의가 쉽게 부합할 수 있었기 때문이었다.

영어초록

As the Cold War system was established after World War II, American academia’s interest in East Asia as well as Korea, the front line of the Cold War, increased. Establishment of East Asian research institutes, new courses and professorship as well as the publication of Korean Studies Guide in the 1950s, shows considerable interest in East Asia and Korea in American academia right after World War II. Especially, the fact that Suematsu’s 朝鮮史のしるべ(1936) and Hatada’s 朝鮮史(1951) were translated and published in the days when there were very few Korean history books in English in the academic field, are an implication of the relation between the colonial historiography in pre-war Japan and post war Korean studies in the U.S. These two books, known to American academia by the Korean Studies Guide and its writers, received conflicting reviews from the time they were first introduced and even after the release of the book. A Short History of Korea was welcomed as a textbook and reference material in the absence of an English history book, but A History of Korea was evaluated as a fresh and objective Korean history book because it was not only based on socioeconomic perspectives but also described in strict criticism of colonial rule.
Indeed, the two books revealed a clear difference in their description and composition, but they were common in that they negatively portrayed Korean history based on the study by former Japanese researchers. Hatada’s work based on socioeconomic perspectives was in line with the theory of lack of feudalism, which Japanese historians argued in the past, that the production relationship revealed in Korean history was developmental but centered on ancient production until the late Joseon Dynasty. This discussion was to find the reason why only Japan could succeed in modernization through feudalism from the time it first appeared by Japanese researchers in the early 20th century, which could lead to the modernization theory that emerged in American academia after the war. In addition, both books deal with the pressure and aggression of foreign forces on Korea as important historical nodes, which have resulted in not only emphasizing the heteronomy of Korean history but also explaining the development of Japanese history. The establishment of the Four Chinese Commanderies(Hansagun), and the Imjin War was a representative basis that not only showed Korea suffering from foreign invasion, but also described as a major phase revealing the historical relationship between the island country Japan and the continent. This was based on the research of former Japanese historians who tried to explain the history of Tōyō(東洋) centered on Japan, and could also be linked to the U.S. policy of pursuing U.S. hegemony and national interests in postwar East Asia.
In conclusion, A Short History of Korea and A History of Korea are not only based on the identity and heteronomy of Korean history, but also faithful to the perspective of former Japanese historians in that they explain the historical relationship between Japan and the continent through Korean history. The reason why these works were able to be distributed to American academia was that the discussion of colonial historiography could easily match the U.S. policy and modernization theory that tried to carry out the security and U.S. national interests in East Asia with Japan as a policy partner.
