舶來的風土：賴慶＜美人局＞、翁鬧＜港町＞的海港經驗與地理建構 (Imported Terroir: The Harbor Experiences and Geographical Construction in Lai Ching’s “The Honey Trap” and Weng Nao’s “The Harbor City”)

本文將位於資本主義前沿的海港當作觀察視角，此一特殊空間的相關書寫，有助於探究個體在帝國地理空間的旅居移動與現代化體驗。筆者嘗試梳理賴慶〈美人局〉（1933）、翁鬧〈港町〉（1939）兩部小說，分析作品呈顯海港生活的哪些特質，海港空間與人物命運的關係被賦予何種意義？擁有海外生活經驗的小說家如何掌握大眾化文體與流行思維、傳達域外風土觀察、提供理解現代性議題的新視野，並透過海港的特殊空間架構小說舞台，來凸顯1930年代社會內部的形成機制、個體的感受，塑造出一種「東亞共時性」的文化想像。 論文指出，海港或具有同樣機能的航路，開放、流動且具有包容性，為文本提供了多層次的批判空間，作家得以藉此質疑那些看似進步實則壞毀的社會矛盾，挖掘潛藏的剝削和失衡。賴慶〈美人局〉透過豐富情節和章回結構，講述台灣留學生在黃金航線上遭遇的情感與財務詐欺事件，作家以通俗生動的文筆進行諷刺，映現了世界性經濟恐慌後社會價值觀的改變。翁鬧〈港町〉通過考現學的方法，更細緻的梳理海港城市紋理，鋪陳一幅紊亂卻自成秩序的神戶風景，小說沒有停留在對都會文明的驚詫或對苦難的呻吟，作家對於日常人物命運的關注和理解，讓這些以通俗筆法書寫的具有社會批判的力道。

영어초록

This study takes the harbor, situated at the forefront of capitalism, as a lens to explore individual mobility within the geographic spaces of the empire and the experiences of modernization. By analyzing Lai Ching’s “The Honey Trap” (1933) and Weng Nao’s “The Harbor City” (1939), I investigate the distinct characteristics of harbor life portrayed in these works and the symbolic connections between the harbor spaces and the fates of the characters. Both authors, enriched by overseas experiences, skillfully employ popular narrative forms and dominant thinking, convey nuanced observations of foreign terroir, and offer fresh perspectives on modernity. These harbor settings provide a unique narrative platform to illuminate the social mechanisms and individual sensitivities during the 1930s and shape a kind of cultural imagination as “East Asian synchronicity.” The paper argues that harbors and their corresponding maritime routes—open, fluid, and inclusive—offer a complex space for critique. Through these settings, the authors question societal contradictions that, while appearing progressive, mask underlying decay, exploitation, and imbalances. In “The Honey Trap,” Lai Ching uses rich plot and episodic structure to portray tales of emotional and financial deceit experienced by Taiwanese students along the golden route. His vivid, popularized writing satirizes shifts in societal values following a global economic crisis. Meanwhile, Weng Nao’s “The Harbor City” meticulously examines the urban fabric of Kobe through the study of modern social phenomena, portraying a chaotic yet structured landscape. Rather than marveling at metropolitan modernity or lamenting hardships, Weng Nao’s empathy for his characters and incisive social critique elevate his popular style to expose the fate and resilience of everyday individuals.
