경기지역 석탑의 보존 실태와 관리방안 (The Conservation State and Management Method of Stone Stupa in Kyonggi-do)

초록

There are many Buddhistic moldings, among which stone
-stupas are the most numerous, in Korean representative
cultural assets. It is going on that researchers not only analyze
out the process of stonework's change according to times and
regions but also make a stylish system of these stupas clear.
Research on the actual condition of their conservation, however,
is not yet conducted much although a lot of investigators try to
make scientific studies recently.
In this paper, we will attempt to examine the designated
cultural properties in Gyoung-gi province. The number of
designated stone-stupas is 24: national treasures are seven and
the others are local cultural properties. We have collected
abundant data on preserved condition through close observation.
First of all, the damage by water is serious; it causes
exfoliation and cracks in the stonework. It also makes the
ground weak, therefore the stupas have structural
transformation. Besides utilizing wrong material for repair, the
alteration of surrounding environment is impairing their
aesthetic images
Secondly, another main reason of damage is the variation in a general idea. People understand that a stone building is just an
old structure, eliminating historical symbols and religious
meanings in repairing and maintaining it. In this case, it has
only not to collapse down.
It is obvious that the stonework should be restored to the
former state through the support of plentiful time and finance;
also, it is important to recover the historical significance and
religious value of stone buildings before everything else. We
need to remember the fact that there are cultural heritages
taking historical value around us. It is necessary that we
reconstruct disappeared temples including the stupas. The
recovery of its image ought to do first in restoring
stone-stupas. We can, then, regain the import of cultural
heritages.
