태생학적 연기설 재검토－ Mahānidāna경, Mahātaṇhāsaṅkhaya경을 중심으로 (Beyond the Embryologic Interpretations of Twelve Nidānas: Focused on Mahānidānasutta and Mahātaṇhāsaṅkhayasutta)

초록

본 연구는 『니까야』(Nikāya)에서 [십이]연기(緣起, paṭiccasamuppāda)에 대한 태생학적 해석의 기원을 추적하여 그 대안적 이해를 제안하는 것을 목표로 한다. 아비담마(Abhidhamma) 해석 이후 십이연기는 태생학적 발생을 설명하는 윤회 이론으로 간주되어 왔다. 비록 주요 논사들과 연구자들이 태생학적 연기설을 거부하고 있을지라도, Mahānidāna경의 ‘식(識, viññāṇa)이 모태(母胎, matukucchi)에 하강[下降, avakkanti]한다’는 표현이나 Mahātaṇhāsaṅkhaya경의 ‘부모(mātāpita), 간답바(gandhabba)의 3가지 조건으로부터 개체가 발생한다’는 설명은 분명하기 때문에, 태생학적 연기설은 수용하기도 거부하기도 어려운 문제로 전해졌다. 이 경전들을 분석하는 과정에서 본 연구는 십이연기를 태생학적 발생에 관한 설명으로 일반화할 수 없는 맥락들을 발견한다. Mahānidāna경의 ‘식이 모태로 하강한다’는 설명은 색계･무색계에 들어선 수행자의 의식이 욕계로 돌아와 언어-인지 활동[名色]을 재개한 것에 관한 설명이다. 법(法, dhamma)에 대한 깊은 이해[意, manas]의 위치를 자궁(yoni)으로 표현한 것[如理作意, yoniso manasikāra]과 같이, 여기서 모태는 의식적 공간을 표현한 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 또한 Mahātaṇhāsaṅkhaya경의 태생학적 설명은 식을 윤회의 주체로 잘못 이해한 사띠(sati) 비구를 대상으로 하여 그의 잘못된 생각에 대치한다. 십이연기에 부가된 태생학적 설명은 식의 생물학적 조건을 설명함으로써 식을 초월적 존재로 오해한 사띠의 생각을 치유하게 된다. 이 경전의 맥락들을 고려할 경우 십이연기는 태생학적 발생에 관한 것으로 일반화하기 어렵다는 내용을 알 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 십이연기 이해는 태생학적 연기설의 시각을 벗어나 경전의 전체 교법과 각 경전들의 맥락을 고려하여 접근해야 한다고 주장한다.

영어초록

This study aims to propose an alternative understanding by tracing the origins of the embryologic interpretations of Twelve Nidānas (paṭiccasamuppāda) in Nikāyas. Since the interpretation from Abhidhamma, Twelve Nidānas has been regarded as a reincarnation theory that explains the embryologic process. Though major commentators and researchers have been rejecting the embryologic interpretations, the embryologic interpretations are regarded to be a difficult issue either to accept or reject because of the expressions such as "consciousness [viññāṇa] descends into the mother’s womb" in Mahānidāna-sutta and "the infant was born from an union of three conditions that are the mother and father and the spirit-being (gandhabba)" in Mahātaṇhāsaṅkhaya-sutta. This study concentrates on the context beyond the embryologic interpretations. The former expression is to be an explanation that consciousness resumes activities of the language-recognition and comes back from Form·Formless Realm (rūpa·ārūpadhātu) to Desire Realm (kāmadhātu) among ‘Three Realms’ (Tayodhātavo). Here the mother’s womb can be understood as a conscious space such as the womb (yoni) expresses the space of a deep understanding (manas) of the law (dhamma). The latter is to be an explanation in context that the consciousness should be understood under human conditions targeting the thought of Sati who misinterpreted it as the subject of reincarnation. In this sutta, embryologic description is added after the explanations of Twelve Nidānas, to correct Sati's idea of regarding it as transcendental being. Considering these contexts, it can be seen that the Twelve Nidānas are difficult to be generalized with the embryologic interpretations. Therefore, this study claims that Twelve Nidānas should be approached by considering the whole teaching and the context of each scripture beyond the embryologic interpretation which is only a later work.
