A Study on the Economic Cooperation of Asia in the Age of Global Economy

초록

This article aims at considering both the socio-economic conditions of the economic success in some East Asian countries and a possibility of cooperations among them, which have been reemerging in the reorganization process of the world economy. Since the cultural explanations for the economic success of the East Asia heavily depend on the arbitrary and selective interpretations that fit only for the successful results, this article attempts another approach to focus on some socio-economic conditions of the economic developments in the region. It goes without saying that the driving forces for the reemergence of such countries came first from their role as the world production center by the combination of almost unlimited supply of labor forces and vast amount of natural resources. Massive influx of foreign capital chasing after the surplus profits might be a pivotal factor resulting in such economic successes. But what is most important for the reemergence of East Asian countries would be the increase in the middle class people in the region and their domestic consumptions.
Nevertheless, East Asian countries have some weak points in the intra-regional cooperations compared to the Western Europe. Therefore, this article argues that the intra-regional cooperations in Asia should be strengthened for the full blossom of the Asian age. Contrary to the past technological dependency theorists who argued that the trades and international division of labor under the name of cooperation would result in persisting underdevelopment as well as in fixing inequality in some countries,this article therefore asserts that several forms of intra-regional alliances,including technological and economic cooperations, are the necessary conditions and prerequisites for the Asian countries to become the forerunner of transforming the global economy.
