'개방성開放性’과 『도덕경道德經』의 ‘곡신불사谷神不死’ (A Study on the Kog-Shin-Bul-Sa(谷神不死) of 『Tao Te Ching道德經』 viewed from an openness(開放性) perspective)

초록

현대사회의 특징은 ‘開放性’이라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 ‘開放性’의 의미를 살펴보고, 이를 토대로 『道德經』 6장 谷神不死’에 대해 고찰하였다. 본 논문에서 개방성은 크게 내적 개방성과 외적 개방성으로 나뉘며, 폐쇄성과 짝을 이루는 개념어이다. 이러한 개방성을 적용한 유형은 크게 네 가지로 나뉜다. 첫째 개체의 내적 개방성과 외적 개방성, 둘째 내적 개방성과 외적 폐쇄성, 셋째 내적 폐쇄성과 외적 개방성, 넷째 내적 폐쇄성과 외적 폐쇄성을 들 수 있다. 이러한 개방성과 폐쇄성의 정도와 밀도는 시간과 공간 그리고 상황과 조건에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 예를 들면 어떤 사람은 어떤 상황과 조건에서는 매우 개방적인 성향을 보이는 데, 밤이라든가 아침에 폐쇄적이 될 수 있다. 또한 개방성의 강도와 밀도 역시 상대적이다.
개방성과 폐쇄성의 개념은 주변의 생명체나 우주 자연을 이루는 물질과 에너지 그리고 시간과 공간에도 적용하여 논의하는 것이 가능하다. 다만 여기에서 논의할 때, 물질은 에너지에 비해 상대적으로 폐쇄성에 가깝다. 그러나 물질도 그 상태를 고체 액체 기체로 나누어 본다면, 고체가 폐쇄성이 가까우며, 액체 기체는 상대적으로 개방성에 가깝다. 따라서 ‘개방성과 폐쇄성의 교차적용’은 반드시 조건과 상황에 따라 달라지는 상대적인 개념으로 적용된다.
본 논문에서는 이러한 開放性의 개념을 ‘谷神不死’에 적용하여 고찰하였다. 谷神不死에서 계곡은 여성성(암컷)을 상징함과 ‘開放性’의 의미를 동시에 내포한다. 여성성은 그 자체로 완성되는 것이 아니다. 비록 谷神이 암컷과 생산을 상징하는 의미로 쓰였다고 하더라도, 궁극적인 여성성의 도달은 바로 개방성을 수반한다는 것을 이해할 필요가 있다. 그런 이유로 ‘谷神’은 여성성과 개방성을 동시에 보여주고 있는 것이다. 특히, 개방성은 폐쇄성과 짝을 이루는 데, ‘계곡의 생명체들’의 開放性은 숲 안의 다양한 대상과의 개방적 의존적 상호관계를 통해서 생명을 유지하는 것을 의미한다. 반면 閉鎖性은 겨울이 오는 계절의 변화라든가, 늙고 시들어서 외부와 개방적이지 않고, 고립되거나 폐쇄성을 통해 드러나는 것을 말한다. ‘숲속의 생명의 폐쇄성’은 밤에 휴식을 취하거나, 겨울잠을 자거나, 나무가 나뭇잎을 떨어뜨리거나 늙고 병들거나 시들어서, 그 생명이 소멸되는 것을 의미한다.
건강한 계곡의 ‘여성성’은 그 자체로 완성되는 것이 아니라 다양한 생명을 끌어안을 수 있는 ‘개방성’을 필연적으로 수반해야 한다. 갇혀 있는 고립된 물이 썩어서 제 기능을 하지 못하는 것처럼 건강한 계곡과 자연의 모습도 좋은 공기가 통하고 좋은 물이 흐를 수 있어야 한다. 마찬가지로 건강한 인간의 삶은 건강한 생명성에 있다. 건강한 생명성은 적절함에 있다. 맹목적인 개방성도 아니며 극단적인 폐쇄성도 아니다. ‘谷神不死’의 진정한 생명성 혹은 여성성은 건강한 개방성과 폐쇄성에 있다.

영어초록

The characteristics of the modern society can be ‘Openness’. This study examined the meaning of this ‘Openness’ and considered about ‘Kog-Shin- Bul-Sa’ as specified in Chapter 6 of 『Tao Te Ching道德經』 on the basis. In this study, openness can be largely divided into internal openness and external openness, which is a concept word mating with closure. The type that this openness is applicable to are largely subdivided into 4 sub-types. First, internal openness and external openness of an entity. Second, internal openness and external closure. Third, internal closure and external openness. Fourth, internal closure and external closure. The degree and density of these openness and closure may depend on time, space, situation and condition. For example, a person shows very opened orientation at a situation and condition, whereas he may become closed in night or morning. In addition, strength and density of openness is also relative.
It is possible to discuss the concept of openness and closure by applying it to substance, energy, time and space that composing the neighboring living things or the universe and nature. However, when discussing herein, the substance is more relatively close to closure than energy. If classifying the state of the substance into solid, liquid and vapor, solid is close to closure, while liquid and vapor are relatively close to openness. Thus, ‘cross-application of openness and closure’ is applicable as relative concept depending on the condition and situation at any time.
This study examined by applying this concept for openness to ‘Kog-Shin-Bul-Sa. In thee ‘Kog-Shin-Bul-Sa’, a valley contains the meaning of ‘openness’ as symbolize the womanhood (female). Womanhood is not completed by itself. Even if ‘Kog-Shin谷神’ is used as meaning of symbolizing female and production, it must understand that the ultimate achievement of the womanhood follows with the very openness. For the reason, the ‘Kog-Shin谷神’ shows womanhood and openness at the same time. Especially, openness makes a pair with closure, and the openness of ‘living things in a valley’ means to maintain the life through the opened dependence relationship with various objects within a forest. Whereas, ‘closure’ means the change of season or things that are old and withered and are not opened and isolated with the outside and are exposed through ‘closure’. ‘Closure of living thing in a forest’ means that taking a rest in the night, hibernating in the winter, tree drops lives, or getting old, ill or withered and that the life is extinct.
‘Womanhood’ of a healthful valley is not completed by itself but must follow ‘openness’ to accommodate various lives. As the contained water goes to decay and fails to exert its function, the look of a healthful valley and nature must follow that good air ventilates and that good water can flow.
Similarly, the life of a healthful human being also depends on a healthful life characteristics. A healthful life characteristics lays in adequacy. Neither it is a reckless openness, nor it is an extreme closure. A genuine life characteristics or womanhood of ‘Kog-Shin-Bul-Sa谷神不死’ lays in a healthful openness and closure.
