초록

본 연구는 마가복음 4:35-41에 나타난 바다를 잠잠케 한 예수의 이적 사건이 출애굽에서의 홍해 바다 승리 사건을 반영하고 있으며, 우주론적이고 종말론적인 측면에서 새 출애굽의 의의를 가지고 있다는 것을 보여준다. 그리고 이러한 해석은 바다에 대한 공간 이해를 통해 이루어진다. 애굽 군대에 쫓기고 있던 이스라엘 백성에게 그들을 가로막고 있는 바다는 생명을 위협하는 장애물이었지만 하나님께서는 바다를 가르고 길을 내어 그들을 안전하게 인도하셨고 애굽의 군대를 바다에서 몰살시키셨다. 출애굽의 이 역사적 사건은 모세와 미리암의 노래(출 15장)에서부터 시편과 이사야에 이르기까지 우주론적이고 종말론적이 의미를 가지고 재해석되어왔다. 여기서 출애굽 이미지를 가진 바다는 이스라엘을 위협하는 혼돈의 세력으로 우주적 차원으로 확장되었고, 하나님께서는 이 혼돈의 바다(the chaos-sea)를 파멸시킴으로서 자신의 우주적 주권(the universal sovereignty)을 확증시켜 보이셨다. 이와 마찬가지로, 예수께서는 혼돈의 세력인 바다를 꾸짖으시고 잠잠케 하심으로 제자들을 안전하게 구원하셨고, 이를 통해 자신이 “우주의 구원자이시며 주”(the universal Savior and Lord)되심을 드러내셨다. 필자는 이러한 해석을 도출하기 위해 사건의 일대일 대응을 연구하는 모형론적 방법론의 한계를 넘어서 본문상호관련성(intertextuality)이라는 접근 방법을 사용하였다. 이 방법은 홍해에서의 역사적 승리 사건을 포함하여 후대 구약 본문들이 이 사건을 어떻게 재해석했는가를 살펴보면서, 예수의 바다 이적 사건이 이러한 구약 본문들과 어떠한 상호 관련성 속에서 의미를 나타내는지를 연구하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 두 부분으로 나뉘어 설명되어진다. 첫째는 출애굽 사건에서의 물리적 바다가 후대 구약 본문 속에서 어떻게 우주론적이며 종말론적인 차원에서 이해되어져 왔는지를 살펴보는 것이다. 둘째는 이것을 기초로 해서 예수가 사나운 바다를 잠잠케 하는 사건이 어떤 방식으로 우주론적이며 종말론적인 의의를 가지고 새 출애굽을 보여주는지를 연구하는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 바다의 공간 이해를 통해 어떻게 바다를 잠잠케 한 예수의 사역이 새 출애굽 의의를 함의하고 있는지를 보여줄 것이다.

영어초록

This study argues that the story of Jesus’ calming the stormy sea reflects the victory at the Red Sea in the exodus story and has the significance of the new exodus in the cosmological and eschatological aspects. This interpretation is based on the spatial analysis of the sea. The Red Sea was an obstacle to threaten the Israelites who were chased by the Egyptian army, but God parted the sea and made a way for the Israelites to cross it over while drowning the Egyptian army there. This historical event of the exodus had been reinterpreted from the song of Moses and Miriam (Exod 15) to Psalms and Isaiah with cosmological and eschatological implications. Here, the sea in the exodus imagery was regarded as the chaotic force in a cosmic dimension and God demonstrated his universal sovereignty by destroying the chaos-sea. Likewise, Jesus rebuked the sea as the chaotic force and calmed it down; the disciples were delivered safely by crossing over it. In this way, Jesus revealed himself as the universal Savior and Lord.For this interpretation, I used the approach of intertextuality which, I believe, may overcome the weakness of typological approach dealing with the one-to-one correspondence between two events. Intertextuality examines the Old Testament (OT) texts that includes not only the historical event of the victory at the Red Sea but also many and diverse reinterpretations of this event. On the basis of this investigation, I will demonstrate how these OT texts are related to the story of Jesus’calming the roaring sea. In this way, the theme and significance of Jesus’ story may be discovered. This study is divided into two parts. First, I will explore how the physical sea in the historical event of the victory at the Red Sea had been reinterpreted with cosmological and eschatological dimensions in the later OT texts. Second, I will investigate how Jesus’ calming the roaring sea disclose the meaning of the new exodus with the cosmological and eschatological significance, in which Jesus becomes the Savior of the people of God and the Lord of the universe. This study, therefore, will show how Jesus’work of calming the sea has the significance of the new exodus on the basis of spatial analysis of the sea, demonstrating that Jesus is the universal Savior and Lord.
