초록

이 논문은, 조세희의 독특한 책임의식이 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』(이하 『난쏘공』으로 약칭)을 쓰게 만들었다는 점에 주목하며, 그가 전달하고자 했던 ‘난장이의 눈’의 정체를 탐구하고, 그 눈의 가시성의 정치-윤리를 고찰하고자 했다. 흔히 『난쏘공』의 세계는 개념적으로 양립불가능한 대립항들이 공존･충돌하며 형성하는 명백한 모순성에 기초해 있다고 읽어 왔다. 그러나 저 선명한 대립의 표상들은 실제로 현실의 비대칭적 관계를 함축하고 있으며, 조세희가 발견하고 전달하고자 했던 ‘난장이의 눈’은 비대칭적 세계를 향한 적대적 시선에 다름 아니었다.
‘난장이들’은 국가 주도의 폭력적인 근대화･산업화･도시화 과정에서 뿌리뽑힘을 당하며 이 비대칭적 세계에 적대하게 되고, ‘전치’ 및 ‘이주 없는 전치’를 경험하는 난장이와 그의 아들딸의 눈 앞에 자본 축적의 식민주의적 본질과 ‘재난도시’의 실체가 드러난다.
『난쏘공』은 서사의 저변에 ‘터전의 박탈’이라는 주제가 흐르고 있는 만큼, 각 계층 및 집단이 환경과 관계 맺는 방식과 관련해서도 의미심장한 차이들을 전개한다. 마치 환경 바깥에, 책임 바깥에 존재할 수 있기라도 한 듯이 행동하는 ‘그들의 환경주의’, 오염 속에 있으면서도 자본과 국가가 세계에 가한 폭력을 자연의 문제로 치환하는 ‘시민들의 환경주의’, 그리고 오염과 파괴의 현장에서 벗어날 수 없음을 절망적으로 자각하는 ‘난장이들의 환경주의’가 그것이다.
‘난장이들’의 절망과 적대는 비대칭적 세계를 향한 징벌적 폭력을 낳는다. 적대의 정치의 맹목과 통찰을 모두 함축한 이들의 폭력은, 끝없이 절망하지만 절망 자체에 정복당하지 않는 절망, 소멸되지도 마비되지도 않는 절망, 즉 ‘패배를 모르는 절망’을 드러내는 한 방식이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This article endeavors to scrutinize the essence of the “dwarf’s eye” motif within Cho Se-Hui's literary oeuvre, specifically focusing on the nuanced politics and ethics surrounding its visibility. It posits that Cho’s distinctive sense of authorial responsibility prompted the creation of The Dwarf (1975-1978). Commonly construed as a narrative marked by the coalescence and confrontation of seemingly incongruent opposites, the work’s stark dialectics subtly underscore asymmetrical power relations endemic to reality. The “dwarf's eye,” a conceptual prism discerned and conveyed by Cho, emerges as a gaze inherently antagonistic toward such asymmetry.
The narrative of The Dwarf elucidates the plight of marginalized individuals, metaphorically represented as “dwarfs,” ensnared in the tumultuous vortex of state-driven modernization, industrialization, and urbanization. Theseindividuals find themselves in direct opposition to an asymmetrically structured world, wherein the colonialist undertones of capital accumulation and the dystopian reality of the “disaster city” unravel before their gaze.
The thematic thread of displacement intricately woven throughout the narrative serves to delineate disparate modes of environmental engagement across various social strata. Three distinct typologies of environmentalismemerge from Cho’s narrative tapestry: firstly, “their environmentalism,” which espouses a delusion of detachment from environmental responsibility; secondly, “civic environmentalism,” which, while acknowledging environmental degradation, relegates it to a deterministic facet of capitalist and state-induced violence; and lastly, “dwarf environmentalism,” characterized by a somber acknowledgment of the futility in evading scenes of pollution and desolation.
The palpable despair and antagonism pervading the “dwarfs’” existence serve as precursors to acts of punitive violence directed at the asymmetrical world they inhabit. Such violence is emblematic of a dialectical interplay between the blindness inherent in despair and the lucidity encapsulated within acts of resistance. It embodies a form of despair that remains undefeated, persisting in defiance of its own inevitability, neither succumbing to annihilation nor succumbing to paralysis.
