초록

본 논문은 가전(可田) 김호석(金鎬䄷, 1957～)의 수묵 인물화를 중심으로 전통화론을 탐구하고 이를 현대적으로 해석한 그의 예술 태도와 미의식을 연구한 것이다. 김호석은 역사적 인물화, 민중화･군중화, 선승인물화･선화 등 자신만의 독창적인 수묵 화법을 토대로 우리의 삶과 시대상, 역사의식을 고찰해 왔다. 1980년대는 군사정권의 불의와 폭력에 맞섰던 광주민주화운동을 계기로 동학농민혁명, 항일의병투쟁, 4･19혁명, 6월항쟁, 노동자 대투쟁, 대학가의 집회 등 민족 민중운동의 현장에 있었던 인물들의 초상, 역사적 사건들을 검은 먹으로 고증해 왔다. 1990년대는 인간과 사회상에 대한 은유와 해학적 표현을 통해 부조리한 시대상, 인간의 끝없는 욕망을 풍자하였다. 김호석의 수묵화는 ‘사의(寫意)’와 ‘전신론(傳神論)’을 토대로 ‘신(神)’을 어떻게 ‘이형(以形)’할 것인가라는 미적 표상의 문제와 결부된다.
이에 2006년, 《문명에 활을 겨누다》展을 기점으로 ‘신(神)을 그린다’는 행위와 ‘형(形)으로써’라는 수단을 지칭하는 ‘이형’을 어떻게 운용하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 인물화의 특징을 분석하면, 첫째는 사실성과 사의성의 상응을 통해 ‘그린 부분’인 필묵과 ‘그리지 않는 부분’의 여백(餘白)을 하나로 통합하였고, 두 번째는 ‘그리지 않고 그린’, 또는 ‘형상 없는 형상’을 나타내기 위해 여백의 바림(渲染)을 운용하였다. 김호석이 제시한 ‘형’은 ‘유(有)’에 ‘신’은 ‘무(無)’에 대응하는 조형 언어로써 현대적･철학적 변용을 거쳐 한국 수묵화의 새로운 지평을 넓혀가고 있다.

영어초록

This paper examines the artistic attitude and aesthetic consciousness of Gajeon (可田) Kim Ho-seok (金鎬䄷, b. 1957), focusing on his exploration of the theory of Korean traditional painting through his ink-and-wash portrait paintings and their modern interpretation. Kim Ho-seok has explored themes of human life, historical scenes, and consciousness of the times, employing his distinctive ink-and-wash techniques in various forms, including historical portraits, folk paintings, crowd paintings, Zen monk portraits, and line drawings.
In the 1980s, influenced by the Gwangju Democratization Movement, which stood against the injustice and violence of the military regime, Kim used black ink to depict figures involved in national popular movements such as the Donghak Peasant Revolution, the anti-Japanese volunteer struggle, the April 19 Revolution, the June Uprising, the great workers' struggles, and university rallies. Through these works, he examined historical events and the lives of the people who participated in them.
In the 1990s, Kim shifted his focus to satirizing the absurdity of the times and critiquing human desires, employing metaphors and humorous expressions to comment on the contradictions of human society. His ink-and-wash paintings engage with the problem of aesthetic representation, particularly how to depict Spirit through shape, grounded in the concept of ‘sa-ui’ (the expression of will/寫意), and the ‘theory of transmitting spirit through shape’ (傳神論).
This paper further investigates Kim’s exploration of the act of ‘drawing Spirit’ and the ‘use of shape/form’ (以形) in his artistic practice after 2006, when the exhibition “Aiming at Civilization” was held. It argues that Kim’s paintings integrate ink, the ‘drawn part’, and the ‘non-drawn part’ (blank space) into a cohesive whole through the correspondence of realism and symbolism. Additionally, his work employs the technique of ‘barim’ (shading/渲染) in the blank margins to express concepts such as ‘drawn without drawing’ or ‘shape without shape’.
The ‘shape’ and ‘Spirit’ presented in Kim Ho-seok’s works are formative languages that correspond respectively to ‘being’ and ‘nothingness’. Through these philosophical and contemporary articulations, Kim is expanding the horizons of Korean ink-and-wash painting, offering a new synthesis of tradition and modernity.
