Ngugi wa Thiong'o's I Will Marry When I Want and Devil on the Cross are a play and a novel written in Gikuyu, unlike previous English works. Despite their difference in genre, these two works have in common in many ways, which constitute their intertextualities. First, they are the first works written in Gikuyu for the Gikuyu people to address the neocolonial reality of Kenya. Second, they are the first, obviously borrowing the literary tradition of orature inherent in the Gikuyu culture. Third, the protagonists are the direct participants or their children of the Mau Mau struggle. Both works deal with the process of their recognition of the new colonial reality of Kenya after independence. I Will Marry When I Want introduces the first generation of the Mau Mau struggle to understand the neocolonial reality centered on rural areas. On the other hand, Devil on the Cross depicts the second generation, who live in Nairobi and enjoy the consumption culture of the West. However they also come to understand the new colonial reality and to be the subjects of the struggle. The key point is the transition of two young female characters; Gathoni in I Will Marry When I Want and Wariinga in Devil on the Cross, from thoughtless adolescents to sincere adults. Therefore, these two works can be read in one or two sections written under the theme of Kenya's new colonial realities and the people's struggle.
