국가 간 거리가 K-Pop 한류 콘텐츠의 온라인 글로벌 확산에 미치는 영향: ‘강남스타일’을 중심으로 (A Study of Country Distance on Online Global Diffusion of K-Pop ‘Korean Wave’ Contents: Focused on ‘Kangnam Styles’)

초록

본 연구는 우리나라 한류 문화 콘텐츠의 전 세계적 확산에 있어서 국가 간 문화적 차이의 영향을 파악하는 연구이다. 기존의 연구들은 한류 확산의 중요성은 인식하고 있었으나 글로벌 한류 확산에 대해서는 상대적으로 덜 관심을 가졌다. 이는 한류 콘텐츠의 전 세계적 확산을 확인해 줄만한 실증적 자료가 부족하였기 때문일 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 Hofstede(1980; 1991)의 문화적 가치 범주와 Ghemawat(2001)의 문화적 차이 구분을 이론적 배경으로 하여, 한류 콘텐츠의 전 세계적인 확산이 확인될 수 있는 K-Pop ‘강남스타일’ 온라인 한류확산 데이터를 통해 분석하였다. 그리고 K-Pop 한류 콘텐츠의 온라인 글로벌 확산에 각국의 문화적 영향을 웹문서, 동영상, 이미지 형태로 구분하여 파악하였다. 연구결과 한류의 확산은 국가 간 특정한 문화적 차이와 이에 근거한 지리적 변수, 그리고 경제적 변수가 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 세부적으로는 첫째, 웹문서 형태의 K-Pop 한류 콘텐츠는 권력거리가 크고 개인주의 성향이 강한 국가에서 확산이 잘되는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 경제적으로 덜 발전된 나라이고 인구가 적은 나라가 확산이 잘되었으며, 지역적으로는 미주지역과 유럽지역에서 확산이 잘되었다. 이는 K-Pop의 온라인 확산 국가의 양극화를 나타내는 내용으로서 동남아를 비롯한 국가들을 기반으로 전 세계로까지 확산되었음을 유추할 수 있으며, 개인주의 문화일수록 자기능력함양이나 개인의 관심사가 중심이 되기 때문에 다른 상징수단에 비해 인지적 노력이 많이 요구되더라도 기꺼이 웹문서를 탐색하여 보기 때문인 것으로 생각된다. 둘째, 동영상 형태의 K-Pop 한류 콘텐츠는 권력거리가 크고 불확실 회피성이 낮은 국가일수록 확산이 잘되는 것으로 나타났으며, 지역적으로 미주지역과 유럽지역에서 확산이 잘되었다. 일반적으로 온라인 콘텐츠의 확산은 ICT 인프라의 영향을 많이 받으므로, 미주지역이나 유럽지역은 ICT 인프라가 잘 갖추어져 있어서일 것으로 생각되며, K-Pop 한류가 동남아를 넘어 미주와 유럽으로 전 세계적인 확산이 된 것은 동영상이 중심이 되었음을 시사한다. 셋째, 이미지 형태의 K-Pop 한류 콘텐츠는 문화적 요인이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 권력거리가 크고 불확실 회피성이 낮은 국가일수록 확산이 잘되는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 불확실 회피성이 낮은 국가의 경우 새로운 문화를 적극적으로 수용하려 하기 때문에 온라인 한류 문화콘텐츠의 확산이 잘되는 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

This study investigate online Korean Wave diffusion of Korean cultural contents. In existed studies, it was recognized the importance of Korean Wave diffusion. But the importance of the cultural influence of countries with relatively less interest in diffusion of Korean Wave. In addition, it was difficult that explain diffusion of Korean Wave using empirical data to show worldwide spread of Korean Wave. Therefore, this study will be trying to investigate cultural effect of countries in the global diffusion of the Korean Wave through empirical data of “Gangnam style” Korean Wave diffusion phenomenon in web, Youtube, image ect. Based on Hofstede (1980, 1991)’s cultural value and Ghemawat (2001)’s type of cultural distance, and on the basis of data that was collected through the Google Trends, we investigate the cultural effect on the global diffusion of the Korean wave in online. Based on findings of this study, this study suggest some Korean Wave diffusion strategy in online to guide Korean Wave diffusion based on cultural distance for Korean Wave managers.
Results of the study, the diffusion of Korean Wave influenced by geographic distance, economic distance and specific cultural differences between nations. It is as follows in more detail.
First, K-pop contents of web document type are well diffused in the country with strong individualism and large power distance. Also these are well diffused low development country and small population country, North America and EU by geographic distance. This result might show that online diffusion of K-Pop Korean Wave reflect polarization of online diffusion and globalization based on Southeast Asia. Text contents are generally required more cognitive efforts than other contents type. Because the more it is individualism culture, the more people focus on cultivation of self-ability and personal interest, we think that people with individualism culture are willing to search web text even though it is required much cognitive efforts.
Second, K-pop contents of Youtube type are well diffused in the country with weak uncertainty avoidance and large power distance, North America and EU by geographic distance. Because ICT infrastructure of country influence online diffusion of Korean Wave contents (Hong & Park, 2014), the more Korean Wave contents diffuse throughout North America and EU that are well equipped ICT infrastructure. This result might show that it is K-pop contents of Youtube type that take lead of global diffusion of Korean Wave contents throughout North America and EU beyond limit of Southeast Asia.
Third, K-pop contents of image type are only influenced by cultural factor and are well diffused in the country with weak uncertainty avoidance and large power distance. This result might show that because people in the country with weak uncertainty avoidance positively accept new culture, diffusion of Korean Wave contents expand well. This result suggest that the effort for diffusion of Korean Wave contents should focus on country of large social inequality and country to set a high value on the freedom and achievement of individual.
This study is lots of limit. First, because this study only investigate global diffusion of Korean Wave contents, ‘Gangnam Style, A lot of problems may occur in generalizing the result of study. Second, limitation of data exist. we analyze data collected through the Google Trends only. Finally, although cultural nature of country is not easily change, Hofstede (1991)’s cultural distance data is old established data. Therefore, in future studies, it should be considered data reflected the change of times.
