초록

Cities are the engines for the economic growth, exploiting opportunities created by agglomeration economies. However, the high concentration of population and economic activities in a city has also caused deteriorated the quality of environment. Many researchers have attempted to investigate the relationship between the economic growth and the quality of environment. However, the results have been inconsistent. Against this backdrop, the study aims to examine the relationship between the economic growth and the quality of environment in a city through an empirical assessment of 96 major cities in the world. The I-PAT (Influence, Population, Affluence, Technology) model has been used as an analytical framework. The impact of urban economic growth on the quality of environment in four areas, namely greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, waste generation and air quality, have been evaluated. The results confirmed that greenhouse gas emissions, water usage and waste generation tend to increase as economy develops while air pollutants tend to be controlled over a certain level of the economic development. Furthermore, the impact of the economic development on the environmental quality is found to be heterogeneous by continent.
