영문 한국사 개설서의 한국고대사 서술 내용 검토 (Reviewing the Description of Ancient Korean History in the Korean history Textbook Written in English)

초록

본고는 세계와 공유하는 한국사 교육을 위해 더 나은 한국사 교재들이 마련될 수 있는 토대를 마련하기 위해 근래에 영미권 대학의 한국사 교육에서 사용되고 있는 대표적인 교재 두 권(Michael Seth 교수의 『A Concise History of Korea』와 Keith Pratt 교수의 『Everlasting Flower』)을 분석하였다.
Michael Seth 교수의 『A Concise History of Korea』는 근현대사가 중심이 되고 있으며, 동아시아사 속에서 한국사를 보려고 한 장점이 보인다. 그러나 한국사 전공자의 영문판 한국사 개설서라고 보기 어려울 정도로 한국 고대사 서술에 있어서 오리엔탈리즘과 중국 중심의 동아시아사 인식을 드러내고 있었다. 책들은 기존 연구들에서 문제점으로 지적된 것과 같이, 단군조선과 삼국 초기의 역사에 대한 부정, 한국의 가교 역할 강조 등 한국사 연구 동향과 동떨어진 학설이 정설로 자리 잡고 있었으며, 한국의 연구 성과를 거의 인용하지 않고 있었다. 또한 서양사･일본사･중국사와의 비교가 자주 등장하면서 한국사를 아류적인 역사로 이해하는 문제점은 여전히 개선되지 않았음을 확인할 수 있었다.
그러나 서술의 오류나 관점의 문제는 있지만, 기존의 영문 한국사 개설서에 비해서 점차 다양한 시도들이 이루어지고 있었다. Keith Pratt 교수의 『Everlasting Flower』는 문화사 중심의 친절한 해석이나 동아시아라는 거시적인 관점에서 한국사를 이해하려 한 서술 경향을 보이고 있었다. 한국사 개설서를 서술할 때에는 한국 학자의 입장이 아닌 외국 독자의 관심을 항상 염두에 두어야 한다는 점을 시사받을 수 있다.
또한 한국사 연구 성과를 반영하지 않은 점이나 사실의 오류를 지적하기에 앞서서 한국사 연구 환경이 글로벌화 될 필요가 있다. 우리도 민족주의적 관점에서 벗어나서 외국의 학자들이 수긍할 수 있는 거시적인 관점에서 한국사 연구를 진행하고 외국에 있는 한국사 연구자들과 교류의 場을 확대하여 소통해야 한다. 한국사 연구자들의 시각과 연구 성과가 반영된 영문판 한국사 개설서가 서술 될 수 있는 환경을 먼저 만들 필요가 있는 것이다. 이를 바탕으로 다양한 시도를 통해 외국 독자의 수준에 맞는 영문 한국사 개설서를 마련한다면, 세계와 공유할 수 있는 한국사를 서술할 수 있을 것이라고 생각된다.

영어초록

In order to build a foundation towards a worldwide shared Korean History education and its textbooks, this paper analyzed the two Korean history textbooks written in English, 『A Concise History of Korea』 by Michael Seth and 『Everlasting Flower』by Keith Pratt, which are mostly well-known and used as the main textbook at university level in recent years.
Michael Seth wrote 『A Concise History of Korea』 and its narrative is mainly focused on the contemporary history and it has described Korean history within the frame of East Asian history. However, these textbooks strongly reflect orientalism and sinocentrism that some may even doubt if these are written by the scholars who majored Korean history. Just like other previous researches has already pointed out, Korean history textbooks in the United States has its own mainstream and its research trend is far apart from the one in Korea. Also, the research achievements that were made by Korean history scholar in Korea are barely used. In addition, the comparative narrative of Korean history with other history such as Western history, Japanese history, and Chinese history causes the problem of miss understanding of Korean history as a minor history and this issue is still frequently appears and has not improved yet.
Although the textbooks have the problems regard to its perspectives and narratives, it has put up some new various attempts compare to previous textbooks. Keith Pratt’s 『Everlasting Flower』 shows tendency to try interprets and explains Korean history with cultural history centered perspectives and also understands Korean history within the East Asian history as its macro frame. Also, this textbook suggests the importance of considering the foreign readers and understanding their interest when scholars is writing a Korean history textbook.
Furthermore, the condition of Korean history research needs to be globalized before criticizing the simple errors of textbooks and complain about the lack of referencing the research achievements made by Korean scholars. It is important to avoid ethnocentrism and able to interpret and understand Korea history in the broader perspective so that Korean scholar’s research achievement may share on international level and expand scholar exchanges and communications. In sum, it is important to make an appropriate research condition first in order to publish Korean history textbook that reflects Korean scholar’s research achievements and perspectives. Based on this research condition, it is possible to have more new attempts to consider foreign readers and publish better and widely shared Korean history textbook.
