Are socialization and training two different notions in the rehabilitation processes of both human children and animals?

In general, socialization is the result of implicit and unconscious instructions over a period of time, and training is the result of explicit and repetitive instructions for a specific purpose within a relatively short period. In this paper, however, we argue that socialization and training are not fixed or clear-cut notions that should be applied to humans and animals separately. Instead, training as a sub-category of socialization comes into play in both humans' and dogs' socialization processes whenever needed. This argument is supported through a comparison of two rehabilitation TV shows in two different cultures. Both of them focus on rehabilitating subjects with behavioral problems and employ experts who have relevant knowledge and experiences. By finding out the sources of the problems and coming up with solutions, the experts play a significant role. the parents and dogs' owners, as well as the subject themselves, are also seen as having to go through some changes. In this paper, the applicability of both socialization and training to humans and dogs is discussed and a comparison of the two TV shows reveal the mutual influences of socialization and training. Even though the two shows differ in subjects, narration styles, relationships between guests and experts, and the frequencies of interactions between them, they show considerable similarities in many respects. The findings show that dogs are socialized into humans‘ world by acquiring rules and norms through sharing or communication with humans, just as children are socialized by obtaining sociocultural knowledge, values, beliefs, and a worldview. Thus, the two notions can be applied to both humans and animals, and socialization can be defined as an ongoing process that requires some training.
