초록

The goal of this study is to seek a simple but useful way to explain varying degrees of meanings of modal verb can, and to consider its pedagogical implication by searching for the possibility of an effectively organized grammar book. After examining an apparently complicated array of modal meanings of the verb can, this study adopts an approach that categorizes modal auxiliary verbs on the basis of a three-way classification of epistemic, deontic and dynamic modality. This classification is based on the recognition, as has been borne out by many studies, that the notion of dynamic modality will comprise all sorts of modal meanings that have not been properly accounted for. This study also examines how five well-known grammar books for intermediate to advanced learners not only neglect to deal with sufficiently extensive modal usages but also fail to present effective ways to systematically and effectively explain away some of the more intractable modal meanings.
