초록

김원일의 『바람과 강』은 변절자의 ‘죄’의 감정과 죽음의식을 인간의 존재론적 차원에서 세밀하게 묘사한 탁월한 작품으로 평가된다. 이인태의 개인적 삶을 중심으로 전쟁의 참혹한 현실과 분단의 아픔을 형상화하고 있으며, 종교의 본질에 대해 깊이 천착하고 있는 작품이다. 『바람과 강』은 인간의 존재론적 죄의식과 실존의 문제를 심층적으로 구현하고있으며, 식민지시대와 6 25 전쟁으로 이어지는 시대의 비극적인 상황까지도 아우르고 있다.
『바람과 강』은 높은 평가를 받는 가치 있는 작품임에도 불구하고 여타 다른작품에 비해 본격적인 논의가 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본고에서는 『바람과 강』을 이인태의 죄의식과 죽음의식을 중심으로 면밀하게 탐구하고자 하며, 죄의식에서 비롯된 ‘죄’의 감정을 수치와 죄책감으로 살펴보고, 자기처벌 행위로 나타나는 타나토스를 구체적으로 탐구하고자 한다. 또한 비판적 종교의식과‘판소리’의 예술적 의미를 찾아보고자 하며, 이는 『바람과 강』에 대한 다양한 해석을 가능하게 하는 데 일조하는 일이 될 것이다.
감정과 정서에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 이인태의 심리적 격동과 죄의식을 살펴보는 일은 그의 자기 처벌의 삶이 변절의 죄를 책임지는 의미라는 것을 이해하는 데 중요한 요인이 된다. 이인태는 자신의 죄를 삶 전체로 책임지고자 스스로를 처벌하는 존엄한 ‘자기처벌자’라고 할 수 있다. 『바람과 강』은 삶과 죽음이라는 근원적 문제에서 출발하여 전쟁의 아픔과 비판적 종교의식, 변절자의 왜곡된 삶의 의미를 탐색하고, 나아가 역사적인 시대상황을모두 아우르고 있는 작품으로 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

Wind and River by Kim, Won-il is evaluated as an excellent work that described the emotion of ‘sin’ and the death awareness of the turncoat in detail in the human’s ontological dimension. It is embodying the miserable reality of the war and the pain of division focusing on Lee In Tae’s personal life, and delving deeper into the essence of the religion. Wind and River is realizing the human’s ontological guilty consciousness and the existent problems in depth, and encompasses even the tragic situation of the time leading to the colonial era and Korean War.
Although Wind and River is a highly assessed worthwhile work, there are few serious discussions about it compared with other works. Hereby in this thesis, Wind and River will be explored closely focusing on the Lee In Tae’s guilty consciousness and death awareness and the emotion of ‘sin’ originating from the guilty consciousness will be examined with the shame and guilt, and Thanatos appearing as the self-punishing behavior will be explored in detail. Also, the critical religious awareness and the artistic meaning of ‘Pansori’ will be searched, which will contribute to making various interpretations on Wind and River possible.
Examining Lee In Tae’s psychological turbulence and guilty science based on the understanding of the emotion and sentiment becomes an important factor in understanding that his self-punishing life is intended to be purged of the defection sin. Lee in Tae is a respectable ‘self-punisher’ who punishes himself to be purged from his sin in his whole life. Wind and River can be evaluated as a work that explores the pain of war, critical religious awareness, and meaning of the turncoat’s distorted life, in addition, encompasses the historical time situation starting from the underlying problem called the life and death.
