A Study on the Space Structure of Lanting and Curve-Stream Banquet Remains in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China

Considering that the basic icon and text of many paintings about the Goksu Banquet were the sublime beauty of surrounded mountains in the Journal of Lanting of Wang Xizh and the non-geometrical shape including the behaviors of classical scholars, a cup of alcoholic beverage while reciting a poem, taking natural streams and forests as background, the Goksu Banquet remains of ‘Lanting’ was the cradle of culture of tasting arts and a garden facility that was an watershed of the culture of the Goksu Banquet. Wang Xizh’s Lanting gatherings showed the example of Confucian artistic spirit that realized temperate pleasure by drinking alcoholic beverages; the realization and imitation of Nanjeongzipseo(蘭亭集序) and Nang-Jeong-Soo-Gye-Do(蘭亭修禊圖) of Wang Xizh represented the symbolism and retro spirit that loved and missed the spring Soo-Gye of Lanting of Wang Xizh. The current Yusang Goksugeo of Nanjeong of Shaoxing is not the cradle of Nanjeongseo(蘭亭序) of Wang Xizh, but the space that had been recreated several times in the period of the Ming and Ching dynasties. It was recreated to reproduce landscape depicted in Nanjeongdo, Nanjeongzipseo and Nanjeongsoogyedo. Nanjeung consists of entrance & approach, Yusang Pavilion, Yusang Pavilion & Curve stream, Shrine of Whang-woogun with Mukji and Mukhwajeong, Nanjeongbijeong & Yeonhwajibu, Gonseogak and Yea-pond of Buangjeong, Nhanjung calligraphy museum and Nanjea Moutain cabin. Ahjibijeong, Sonanjeong(Nanjeongbijeong), the Mukji and Mukhwajeong of shrine of Whang- wugun are traditional facilities and important places related with Wang Xizh. However, Eubijeong is a different and authoritative element that was built by Emperor of the Ching dynasty. However, Yusang Goksu centering on Yusang pavilion is the core of Nanjeong, and showed the most clearly the identity of the place. Hence, it is a place where we can identify the attachment of a place.
Yusang Goksugeo of the current Nanjeong of Shaoxing is a facility for parties, and the water from Ahji goes through Goksuro with 6 curves to Bangji where the Nanjeongbijeong is. The direction of this flow is from east to west, embracing the idea of life. The width of it is about 60～80cm. The depth is about 30～40cm. The total length is about 90m. There is no special decoration, but a sign of suggesting it is Yusang Goksu. Around the Goksu, Aciosasa edulis and Bambus multiplex are scattered. Geese raised in Ahji plays a great role to awaken Wang Xizh as the goose lover and the calligrapher. The practice of Goksu Yusang that continues until now and the practice of rubbing the monuments and calligraphy become the program and event that multiple the value and meaning of Nanjeong as a historic site.
