감사인의 산업 전문성과 감사품질 사이의 관계 (The Association between Auditor Industry Expertise and Audit Quality)

초록

외국의 선행연구들은 특정 산업을 전문적으로 다루는 산업전문가 감사인의 감사품질이 높다고 보고하였다. 그러나 이와 관련하여 국내에서 수행된 선행연구들은 산업전문가감사인의 감사품질이 우수한지에 대해 명확한 결론을 내리지 못했다. 본 연구에서는 이 차이점의 원인을 살펴보기 위해, 피감기업들을 이익의 상향조정을 적극적으로 수행하는 기업, 이익의 하향조정을 적극적으로 수행하는 기업, 그리고 기타 기업의 세 하위표본으로 구분하였다. 그리고 세 하위집단별로 각각 산업전문가 감사인이 재량적 발생액의 수준으로 측정한 감사품질에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 전체 표본을 이용한 연구에서는 선행연구들의 발견처럼 산업 전문성의 효과를 명확히 발견할 수 없었다. 그러나 이익조정의 수준에 따라 표본을 구분하여 분석하면 산업전문가 감사인이 감사한 피감기업들의 이익조정 성향이 일반적으로 적다는 것을 발견하였다. 또한 이익의 하향조정을 적극적으로수행한 피감기업의 경우 산업전문가 감사인이 이익의 하향조정 성향을 더욱 촉진한다는 것을 발견하였다. 본 연구는 국내시장에서 산업전문가 감사인의 효과를 보여준다는 측면에서중요한 시사점이 있다.

영어초록

Several prior studies performed in the U.S. document that industry specialist auditors provide high-quality audit service. In contrast, Korean studies yield mixed results on the effect of an industry specialist auditor. Therefore, prior studies generally suggest that the effect of the industry specialist auditor is not clear. To explore this difference in the empirical findings between Korea and the U.S., this study repeats the analysis by classifying firms into three sub-samples: firms engaging in larger magnitude of income-increasing/income-decreasing earnings management, and the others that do not engage in extreme (either income-increasing or income-decreasing) earnings management. This approach is intended by the implicit assumption that industry specialist auditors may not restrict all kinds of earnings management uniformly. When we use the full sample and adopt the propensity score matching technique to control for client characteristics, consistent with the findings in most of the prior Korean studies, we fail to find the strong and consistent evidence of industry specialist auditors providing high-quality audit services. However, when we perform analysis with the three sub-samples, the results change dramatically.
For the firms engaging in the larger magnitude of income-increasing earnings management and the others, we find that industry specialist auditors reduce the magnitude of income-increasing earnings management. For the firms engaging in the larger magnitude of income-decreasing earnings management, we find that industry specialist auditors promote more income-decreasing earnings management, suggesting that they tend to use a more conservative audit approach. These findings provide important implications into the effect of auditor industry expertise.
