소득수준과 문화적 여건이 행복감에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Income Level and Cultural Conditions on Happiness)

초록

소득수준이 높아지고 여가시간이 증가되면서 자신의 삶을 어떻게 느끼고(life satisfaction) 어떻게 사느냐(quality of life)가 중요한 시대에 접어들었고, 행복한 삶에 대한 관심은 고조되고 있다. 그동안 연구에서는 소득수준과 같은 경제적 변인이 행복에 미치는 영향을 인정하면서도 기본욕구를 충족시킬 수 있는 수준을 넘어서면 상관 정도가 미미하다는 결과들을 발표하면서, 소득뿐만 아니라 행복을 증진시킬 수 있는 추가적인 결정요인으로 문화적 가치가 집중되고 있다.
본 연구는 우리는 왜 행복하지 않는가? 행복의 충분조건으로 문화적 여건이 성립될 수 있는가?의 연구 질문에 착안하여「2014년 서울서베이」원자료 실증분석을 통해 소득 및 문화적 여건과 행복의 관계, 소득수준별 행복에 영향을 미치는 문화적 여건 차이를 분석하였다. 분석결과 소득수준이 높은 집단일수록 행복감이 더 크지만, 중소득-고소득의 행복감 차이보다 저소득-중소득의 행복감 차이가 훨씬 큰 것으로 나타났다. 또한 소득수준이 행복감에 영향을 미치기는 하지만, 거주지 주변의 문화환경 만족도와 일상생활에서의 문화예술 비중 등 일부 문화적 여건이 소득보다 행복감에 미치는 영향력이 더 크고, 소득수준에 따라 행복감에 영향을 미치는 문화적 여건이 다른 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 소득계층에 따라 문화적 여건 4가지 변수가(축제 참여경험, 거주지 주변 문화환경 만족도, 일상생활에서 문화예술의 비중, 연간 문화관람 횟수) 행복감에 미치는 영향이 달리 나타났다. 4가지 변수 중 저소득층은 문화관람과 행복감에 유의관계가 없었고, 고소득층은 축제와 행복감에 유의관계가 없었다.
이러한 연구 결과는 몇 가지 중요한 문화 정책적 시사점을 제공한다. 먼저 소득은 저소득층에게 행복감을 높여주는 중요한 요소이지만, 전반적으로 소득수준보다 거주지 주변의 문화환경에 만족하고 일상생활에서 문화예술의 비중이 높을 때 행복감이 더 높아진다. 따라서 사회 전반에 풍요롭고 만족스러운 삶의 환경 조성에는 경제성장 위주의 정책보다는 문화 정책이 효과적일 수 있다. 다만, 문화정책은 획일적인 공급보다는 소득계층에 따라 추구하는 문화적 가치와 욕구를 충족시킬 수 있도록 세분화된 전략이 필요하다.

영어초록

How individuals feel about their own life, namely life satisfaction, and how they live, namely quality of life, are of importance in this era along with mounting income level and increasing leisure time, and there is a growing concern for a happy life. Meanwhile, studies established that economic variables such as income level affect happiness. But the studies also found that the variables aren't significantly correlated with happiness once after it satisfies basic needs, and cultural value draws a lot of attention as an additional determinant for happiness promotion in addition to income.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of income and cultural conditions to happiness and any possible differences in the influence of cultural conditions on happiness according to income level by making an empirical analysis of the raw data of the 2014 Seoul Survey. Twp research questions were posed: Why are we humans unhappy? Can cultural conditions be regarded as a sufficient condition for happiness? The findings of the study were as follows: The group whose income was at a higher level felt more happiness, but the disparity in happiness between the middle-income earners and the high-income earners was far greater than that between the low-income learners and the middle-income earners. Although income level had an impact on happiness, some cultural conditions including satisfaction with cultural environments around residential areas and the weight of arts and culture in daily life exercised larger influences on happiness than income. And how cultural conditions affected happiness varied with income level. Finally, to what extent four variables of cultural conditions(experience of participating in festivals, satisfaction with cultural environments around residential areas, the weight of arts and culture in everyday lie and yearly frequency of viewing cultural events) impacted on happiness differed with what income brackets they belonged to. Among the four variables, there was no significant relationship between viewing cultural events and happiness in the low-income bracket, and no significant relationship was found between festival participation and happiness in the high-income bracket, either.
The findings of the study gave several significant suggestions on cultural policy: Even though income is one of integral elements to boost happiness, people are happier when they are satisfied with cultural environments around their residential areas and when the weight of arts and culture is higher in daily life rather than when their income levels are higher. Therefore a successful cultural policy can be more effective at creating affluent and satisfactory life environments than an economic growth-oriented one. And it should be noted here that segmented approaches should be taken in consideration of what cultural value each income bracket pursues in order to meet their needs separately instead of merely seeking after a uniform policy.
