감사인의 산업전문성과 감사시간에 관한 연구 (A Study on The Relation between Auditor Industry Specialization and Audit Hours)

초록

본 연구는 감사인의 산업전문성과 감사시간의 관계를 분석하였다. 실증분석 결과 감사인의 산업전문성과 감사시간은 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 나타냈다. 이는 평균적으로 산업전문성이 높은 감사인일수록 산업내 명성을 유지하려는 유인이 높기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 그러나 감사인의 규모에 따른 산업전문성과 감사시간의 관계를 분석한 결과 Non-Big4 회계법인에서 음(-)의 관계를 보인 반면, Big4 회계법인에서는 양(+)의 관계를 보였다. 이는 Non-Big4 회계법인에서는 산업전문성이 높은 감사인일수록 감사업무의 효율성이 높기 때문에 감사시간을 적게 투입하여 감사보수 극대화를 달성하려는 유인이 있으며, Big4 회계법인에서는 산업전문성이 높을수록 산업내 명성유지에 중점을 두는 것으로 판단된다.
감사인의 산업전문성은 특정산업의 계속감사를 통하여 축적할 수 있으므로 추가적으로 산업계속감사기간이 산업전문성과 감사시간의 관계에 미치는 영향을 통제하여 분석하였다. 분석결과, 산업전문성과 감사시간의 관계는 Non-Big4 회계법인에서는 유의한 음(-)의 관계를 보였으며, Big4 회계법인에서 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 나타내어 산업계속감사기간을 통제하고도 주요 결과는 변하지 않았다.
본 연구는 산업전문성과 감사시간의 관계를 산업전문감사인의 명성유지 유인과 감사의 효율성 유인의 측면에서 규명하였다. 또한 본 연구는 감사서비스 제공자의 입장에서 산업전문성을 통해 감사인이 얻는 효익이 감사인의 규모에 따라 다른 양상으로 나타난다는 증거를 제시하여 감사인의 산업전문성에 대한 추가적인 시각을 제시할 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine whether there is a relation between auditors’ industry specialization and audit hours. It is hypothesized that an auditor specializing in a certain industry is expected to be more efficient in performing the audit and that as a result of the efficiency the auditor will be able to reduce audit hours, known as an audit cost. However, it is also argued that concerns to maintain industry reputation and audit quality lead to an increase in audit hours. To test these competing hypotheses a sample of 3,145 firm years with available data from 1999 to 2009 for 17 industries is collected.
The empirical results indicate a positive relation, in general, between auditors’ industry specialization and audit hours. However, we found that a negative relation between auditors’ industry specialization and audit hours for non-big4 auditors but a positive relation for big4 auditors. These results imply that a non-big4 auditor with highly specialized knowledge of an industry tends to reduce audit hours by performing auditing effectively while a big4 auditor with industry specialty tries to maintain their industry reputations by spending more audit hours. Therefore industry specialization does not mean the same according to auditor's size.
In an additional test, we use industry audit tenure and assume that the longer the industry tenure an auditor maintains the higher knowledge and more experience the auditor earns, affecting the relation between industry specialization and audit hours. Even we controlled industry tenure, the main results were not changed.
On the auditor's perspective, this study may help enhance our understandings over auditors’ industry specialization by showing that the industry specialty enables an auditor to reduce required audit hours and therefore to magnify the revenue. However this finding is not always the case for big4 auditors who try to hold their industry reputation and enhance audit quality.
