대학-기업 간 연구개발협력에서 불확실성, 협력 관리시스템, 기업의 혁신 성과 간 관계에 대한 연구 (The relationship among uncertainty, cooperation management system and innovation output in R&D cooperation between firms and universities)

초록

대학과의 연구개발협력은 기업들이 혁신에 필요한 지식과 정보를 외부로부터 습득ㆍ활용할 수 있는 주요한 방법이다. 그러나 대학-기업 간 협력은 조직 간 목표와 임무, 문화 등의 차이에서 오는 관계적 불확실성이 높으며, 주로 원천 기술 분야의 초기 기술개발 단계에서 협력이 이루어지므로 협력과제의 기술적 불확실성도 높다. 이러한 불확실성은 대학과의 협력을 실행하는 과정에서 기업이 직면하게 되는 주요 도전 요소가 되며, 이 요소들을 어떻게 관리할 것인가가 기업의 혁신성과를 결정하는 중요한 요인이 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 대학-기업 간 협력과정에서 발생하는 도전 요소들에 전략적으로 대처하고 협력 실행과정을 효과적으로 관리하기 위한 기업의 협력 관리시스템을 상호조정시스템과 통제시스템으로 구분하고 각 시스템을 구성하는 세부 관리 방식들을 논의하였으며, 각각의 세부 관리방식이 기업의 혁신성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 또한 대학-기업 간 연구개발협력의 특성인 관계적 불확실성과 기술적 불확실성이 협력 관리시스템과 기업혁신 성과 간 관계에서 어떠한 조절 효과를 갖는지를 분석하였다. 분석 결과에 의하면 대학과의 연구개발협력에서 통제시스템보다는 상호조정시스템이 성과에 미치는 영향이 전반적으로 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 특히 세부 관리 방식으로서는책임자 간 비공식적 상호 작용의 활성화와 조직간 수평적인 상호 영향력 확대가 성과 창출에 중요함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 협력 실행과정에서 불확실성이 높을수록 상호조정시스템이 성과에 미치는 영향이 전반적으로 높아지고, 불확실성이 낮은 경우에는 통제시스템의 영향이 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 기업 경영 측면에서 볼 때 기술 및 관계적 불확실성이 모두높은 상황에서는 상호조정시스템에 중점을 두는 것이 바람직하며, 두 가지 불확실성이 모두 낮을 때는 통제 시스템에, 하나의 불확실성만 높은 경우에는 상호조정시스템과 통제시스템의 적절한 결합이 바람직한 것으로 분석되었다.

영어초록

R&D cooperations with universities are key factors for innovative firms to get useful informationand knowledge for innovation from outside. However, there are high relational uncertainties inthe relationship between universities and firms because of the differences in their objects,missions, and cultures. The development of technology in its early stage or in generic knowledgealso causes high technological uncertainties in R&D cooperation between universities and firms.
These technological and relational uncertainties are the main challenging factors for the firmswho are cooperating with universities, and therefore, it is crucial for the firms to strategicallycope with these challenges and to effectively manage the process in the implementation phaseof the cooperations with universities.
Hence, this paper discusses two management systems, reciprocal adjustment system andcontrol system, which deal with these uncertainties and manage the implementation of R&Dcooperations with universities. Two management systems and their impacts on the innovativeoutputs of firms were analyzed. Technological uncertainties, relational uncertainties, and thecharacteristics of R&D cooperation between universities and firms were employed to discusstheir moderating effects on the relationship between each management system and firms'innovation outputs.
According to the results, reciprocal adjustment system rather than control system has apositive impact on raising firms' innovation outputs in R&D cooperation with universities.
Especially, two management methods, informal communication between managers of eachorganization and horizontal influence between partners, are considered crucial for enhancingthe performances of the alliances between firms and universities.
When technological and relational uncertainties are high, reciprocal adjustment system exertmore influence on firms' innovation outputs than control system, and therefore, firms arerecommended to focus on reciprocal adjustment system. On the other hand, when technologicaland relational uncertainties are low, control system has more effect on firms' innovation outputsthan reciprocal adjustment system, and accordingly, firms are needed to concentrate on controlsystem. Firms are also guided to put emphasis on the optimal combination of reciprocaladjustment system and control system when the levels of uncertainties are different.
