김정한 「지옥변(地獄變)」의 원전비평적 연구 (The Textual Critical Study of the Kim Jeong-han's 「Picture of Hell」)

초록

『Picture of Hell』(1970) is the novel which has many clear differences among the versions, comparing with Kim Jeong-han's other novels. This study examines the problem that we should consider carefully when we edit the Kim Jeong-han's new complete collection by comparing the versions.
The first edition of the original text was done in Han-eal publishers by hand writing. In this version were some sentences inserted, which showed the psychological status of the characters through the scenes that Cha-dol entered the newspaper company and talk with the head of the social department. And the limited part of the introduction was amended too.
The second edition was done in Samsung pubilishers. This version adopted the introducing part of the Han-eal and added some new sentences in connection with the recollection. In addition, this version revised and added some sentences which showed again the psychological status of the characters before recollection and the episode how the characters to be orphans.(This study shows in the end of chapter 3 that the final edition should be amended by considering the Han-eal, Samsung, and Changbee altogether)
The ending part of the story is recasted in Samsung. (Changbee, the major text, has the same ending with Samsung, which is the basic text for Changbee). The major scenes of the ending part which are eliminated in Samsung and Changbee are as follows:
1) Ulsanni comes and visits in the early morning and listens that the reason of the flood is the reclamation of the reservoir. 2) Chadol listens to the episode that the victims of the flood impeach the mayor in the school which became a shelter. 3) The old man Song speaks to the victims after hearing the shouting of the highschool students heading for a rally. 4) Listening to the shouting of the students, Cha -dol recollects the principal Gondo-oh. 5) Before the rally group arrives at the mayor's house, they cannot find Cha-dol at the time when the mayor's house bursts into flame.
As considering the roles of the characters and the episodes, Ulsanni and Song are very important characters even after the flood. As Samsung and Changbee omitted these two characters, the ending part moved too fast and the balance of the story was broken. In addition, as considering the themes of this novel─the awakening of the wrong historical reality─, the hint that Chadol is envolved in the incendiarism and the fact that he hated Gondo-oh are too important to be eliminated in the novel. That is why we should follow the original version for the ending part.
Without any connection between the versions, there are some errors in connections with the chronology and the actuality. We can explain it on the editorial note that Cha-dol goes to elementary school. And we can revise the error of the mention of Soonam's family members. We need to edit the final edition by considering and revising the unnecessary association with the omitted parts, and by choosing the sentence “where is she and what is she doing?” to show Soo-nam's longing for his mother.
