Strong in tests but weak in creativity is self-lamentable phenomena in the region inherited East Asian cultural legacy. It is undeniable fact that until the 20th century the world has been led by western civilization through the continuous transformation such as Reformation, enlightenment movement, scientific revolution, French revolution, industrialization, etc while the rest of the world had lagged behind.
Creativity and imagination need cultural context or climate which allows any challengers in society to go beyond boundaries. In this connection, this paper is made to investigate salient traits of the Eastern Asian culture which has functioned to shape the consciousness of people in the region.
Under the influence of state run selection system for national bureaucrats in Confucius doctrine over one thousand years, there were a cultural legacy formed that learning had tended to be recitation of the words of great sages. In this connection, even today schooling in Korea is conducted in a way that students are prepared to provide correct answers as much as possible in achievement tests. In order for creativity and imagination to be facilitated Korean school has to adopt aggressive measure to change conventional test oriented schooling toward open climate where students can exercise diversified experiences as free being.
