초록

In this paper, I examine the reproduction and transformation of tropes of travel and reclusion between the medieval and early modern periods. Referring to Saikaku’s fiction and other sources, I argue that there emerged in the early Edo period a new notion of “healing”: one specific to the kind of community that formed in the urban spaces of the Edo period.
The development of woodblock print culture in the early Edo period resulted in an unprecedented breadth of reception for the aristocratic culture of the Heian period and the Higashiyama culture of the Muromachi period, which came to be apprehended broadly but in little depth. Though Edo period printed materials did not always impart to their readers an accurate understanding of such cultures, early modern readers nevertheless aspired to their cultural past and reproduced it in their own lives.
Haikai poets, whose travels were characterized above all by the financial struggles that they entailed, nevertheless likened their own trips to the journeys of Sōgi and Saigyō. Similarly, in The Life of an Amorous Man, though Yonosuke travels alongside outcasts and entertainers with no connection to high culture, Saikaku’s narration is scattered with classical rhetoric and allusion, striking a balance between the high/elegant (ga) and low/vulgar (zoku).
Early modern representations of reclusion (insei), meanwhile, referred not only to the image of Yoshida Kenkō (the archetypal medieval Japanese recluse) but also to Chinese recluse literature to create images of leisure and relaxation.
Finally, I argue that, to the commoner inhabitants of Japan’s early modern urban spaces, the common possession of a shared space and lifestyle itself constituted a form of “healing”: one created by the urban community to support an often tenuous existence.
