Abstract
NONALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE is emerging as the most common chronic liver condition in the worl d. It is associated with insulin resistance and frequently occurs with features of the metabolic syndrome. Disease presentation ranges from asymptomatic elevated liver enzyme levels to cirrhosis with complications of liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. Current treatment recommendations are limited to weight loss and exercise, although several promising medications are on the horizon. In this article we discuss the etiology, pathogenesis and diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease as well as approaches to its management.

NONALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE(NAFLD)의 진단은 과도한 알코올의 과거력 없이 간의 지방 변화의 증거가 필요하다. NAFLD의 조직학적 스펙트럼은 일반적으로 양성의 약한 지방증(steatosis)에서 간세포 염증 및 손상의 증거가 있는 지방증(비알콜성 지방염 nonalcoholic steatohepatitis 또는 NASH)에 이르며, 이는 진행성 섬유증(fibrosis) 및 간경변증(cirrhosis)으로 인해 복잡해질 수 있다. NAFLD는 원인에 따라 일차성 또는 이차성일 수 있다(Table 1).
