본문내용

Due to the recent drastic increase in the consumption of natural resources, humanity faces serious issues of limited energy sources (National Geographic, 2014). Moreover, the issue is worsening due to the significant increase in the global population (reached 7 billion in 2011) (National Geographic, 2014). It is highly likely that the global population will reach 9.6 billion by 2050 (National Geographic, 2014). Therefore, global resources will continue to shrink, and people will be less able to access energy in the future due to this effect. According to the Global Footprint Network study, 1.5 planets are required to provide the resources we consume now (National Geographic, 2014). Thus, it is very urgent for mankind to acquire (Energy Predicament, 2014) diverse and sustainable energy sources to meet the demands of the rapidly increasing population. S. cerevisiae, widely known as Brewer’s yeast, is a single-celled organism that will be investigated in this experiment.
