초록

제주의 문화자산으로서 신화에 대한 새로운 인식과 재평가의 움직임은 다양한
탐라신화에 대한 선학들의 연구에 기반을 두고 있다. 여성에 대한 남성의 지배가
당연한 자연법칙처럼 믿고 있는 사람들에게 충격적이라 할 만큼 탐라신화에는 지
혜롭고 강인한 여성상이 등장하며, 이들에 대해 주목하는 최근의 연구는 제주 사
회의 구성요소에 대한 본질적 탐구라 할 만하다.
제주도의 독특한 종교문화는 열악한 제주여성들의 삶의 정황에 기인한 것이
다. 絶海孤島의 지리적 제한, 척박한 자연환경과 어려운 역사적 상황 속에서 제주
여성들은 집안일, 밭일, 바닷일에 더해 사회적 역할까지 감내해야 하는 고난의 삶
을 살아내야 했다. 삶을 위협하는 자연의 변화에서 생명 보존과 풍요에 대한 강한 염원은 초월적 존재에 대한 신앙과 敬畏로 표현되었다. 다양한 성격의 신화와 공
간이 창출되었고, 신앙 공간의 주된 행위자는 척박한 제주 사회를 이끌었던 여성
이라는 점이다.
장기간에 걸친 여성 우월적인 문화패턴이 인류역사 초기에 존재했었음을 알리
는 증거들은 여러 민족의 건국신화에 잘 드러난다. 性的인 역할과 능력에 대한
기대치가 근래에 들어 크게 달라지면서 우리의 각별한 관심을 끄는 것은 인류 역
사의 초기에는 여성우월적인 문화패턴이 자연스러운 것이었으며, 더욱이 그런 시
대가 아주 오랫동안 지속되었다는 것 또한 역사적 사실이다.
인간생활의 총체적인 표현이 역사이며, 이것에는 생활습속을 포함한 신앙, 의
식의 한 형식으로 신화를 품고 있다. 제주에 전승되고 있는 풍부한 내용의 신화는
그럴 만한 역사적 배경 위에서 가능한 일이었다. 원래 신화의 형성은 이성의 지배,
과학기술의 발달이나 산업화 현상 등 합리주의의 근대적 요소들과는 공존하기 어
려운 것인데, 제주인의 역사는 이 같은 反신화적인 요인들이 비교적 약했다는 것
이다. 이렇게 볼 때, 탐라신화의 형성과 전승과정에 잘 드러나는 여성적인 감성
요소들이 많이 발견되는 것은 제주의 역사가 전근대적인 단계에 오래 머물렀다는
사실에 기인한다.
근대 유럽의 계몽적 합리정신이 추상적인 자연법칙을 발견하고 자연과학과 테
크놀로지를 이용하여 기계문명과 산업사회를 일으켰던 역사는 남성적인 이성능력
의 소산이었다. 반면, 합리주의와 산업문명에 의해 마멸되지 않은 소박한 인간성
의 온존상태와 같은 여성적인 감수성과 보호본능을 강하게 드러내는 탐라신화는
제주 역사문화의 전개과정에서 풍요를 담당하는 주체적 역할을 부여받고 있다는
것에 주목해야 한다. 이것은 한반도의 여러 건국신화가 전쟁과 투쟁으로 점철되는
영웅신화로 여기의 여성상이 객체 또는 매개체의 역할에 제한되어 있지만, 탐라신
화에 보이는 여성상은 여성영웅으로서 천지와 국토를 창조하고 풍요를 가져다주
는 주체로서의 역할이 부여되어 있다는 점이 특징이다.
미래의 제주사회를 이끌어 갈 새로운 가치 발견이라는 측면에서, 이제까지 홀
대받았던 탐라신화의 가치는 새롭게 인식되고 재평가되어야 할 것이다. 따라서 제
주문화의 전승 기반으로서 탐라신화에 보이는 여성성의 역사문화적 이해는 제주
문화의 외연을 확장하는 계기이면서도 탐라신화의 역사적·문화사적 위상을 재정립하는 데 일정한 방향성을 提高할 수 있을 것이다

영어초록

A move to newly perceive and reevaluate Jeju Island’s myths as Jeju
Island’s cultural asset is based on previous scholars’ studies of various
Tamra mythologies. Tamra mythologies show such wise and strong
feminine images as can be shocking to those who see male dominance
over women as natural law. Recent studies focusing on these images
deserve to be considered as intrinsic explorations into the components
of Jeju Island’s society.
Jeju island’s unique religious culture is based on bad life situations
of the Jeju Island women. In the remote and isolated island with
geographic limitations, harsh natural environment and turbulent history,
the women of Jeju Island had to go through hardships to play social
roles as well as to work around the house, in fields and at sea. Their
strong desire for survival and abundance in the changes in nature that
poses a threat to life was expressed in faith and awe of supernatural
beings. Different types of myth and space were created accordingly,
and major leaders in the space of faith were women that led the Jeju
Island’s harsh society.
Many tribes’ state-founding myths clearly show proofs that there was a long-term female-dominating culture pattern in the early stage of
human society. As the expectation of gender role and capacity has
changed greatly these days, people are currently paying keen attention
to the facts that female-dominating culture pattern was natural in the
early stage of human history and that such a stage lasted for a very
long time.
The comprehensive expression of human life is history, which
contains myths as a form of faith and ceremony including manners and
customs. Myths with rich contents inherited to the Jeju Island people
have their sufficient historical backgrounds. The formation of a myth
is difficult to coexist with modern factors of rationalism such as the rule
of reason, the development of scientific technology or the phenomenon
of industrialization. Nevertheless, these anti-mythical factors had relatively
little influence on the history of the Jeju Island people. Feminine
emotional factors revealed well in the process of formation and
inheritance of Tamra mythologies are found a lot; this is attributed to
the fact that the history of the Jeju Island was kept for a long time in
the pre-modern stage.
Enlightenment rationalism in modern Europe helped to discover
abstract natural law and to develop machine civilization and industrial
society using natural science and technologies. This history was the
outcome of masculine reasoning ability. Meanwhile, Tamra mythologies
clearly reveal feminine sensitivity and protective instinct such as the
maintenance of simple humanity that is not destroyed by rationalism
and industrial civilization. It is noteworthy that Tamra mythologies have
been granted subjective roles in being responsible for abundance in the process of the Jeju Island people’s historico-cultural development. Many
state-founding myths in the Korean Peninsula include heroic myths
filled with wars and strifes. Although feminine images in these myths
are limited to the roles of objects or intermediaries, feminine images
seen in Tamra mythologies are characterized as heroines having been
granted the roles of entities to create heaven and earth and to bring
about abundance.
In terms of the discovery of a new value to lead the future Jeju
Island’s society, it is necessary to newly perceive and reevaluate the
value of Tamra mythologies that have been neglected up to now. So, a
historico-cultural understanding of femininity seen in Tamra mythologies
as the foundation for the inheritance of the Jeju Island’s culture will be
a trigger to expand the realm of the Jeju Island’s culture and also to
improve the sense of direction for reestablishing the cultural-historical
status of Tamra mythologies.
