(1) 정신분석적 관점
전통적 정신분석 이론들은 소아성애장애가 역기능적인 아동기에 생성된 갈등들의 표현이라고 말한다. 이 입장에 따르면, 이 증상은 그러한 갈등들을 다룸으로써 ‘치유’될 수 있다.

(2) 행동주의적 및 인지적 관점
행동주의적 이론들은 소아성애적 욕구가 학습에 의해 정립된다고 보았다. 소아성애적 욕구가 학습에 의한 것이라는 전제가 성립된다 해도 이러한 학습이 고전적 조건화의 과정을 따르기보단 각인(imprinting)의 과정을 거친다는 것을 인지하는 것이 중요하다 (Fagan et al., 2002). 각인을 통해 학습된 것은 일반적으로 탈조건화되거나 학습 전으로 돌이킬 수 없기 때문에 이러한 관점을 바탕으로 한 성적 지향성의 재정립화는 논쟁의 여지가 있다.
Freund와 Kuban(1994) 외 연구자들은 “학대 받은 학대자 이론(abused abuser theory)”를 주장했는데, 이는 소아성애장애가 성애장애자 자신의 유년시절 성적 학대로부터 파생된 장애일 수 있음을 시사했다. 수 많은 사례들이 아동 대상의 성범죄자들이 유년시절 성적 6 학대를 받은 이력을 더 많이 지니고 있으며 이로부터 파생된 트라우마를 더 심하게 앓고 있음을 시사했다. 그러나 여전히 상당수의 소아성애범죄자들이 유년시절의 성적 학대를 부인하고 있으며 이러한 주장들이 거짓일 가능성도 있으나 소아성범죄자들 모두가 필연적으로 유년시절 성적 학대를 경험했어야 한다고 주장하기는 어렵다 (Cohen & Galynker, 2002). 소아성애범죄자들이 감형 혹은 동정을 위해 과거 사건을 조작해 보고할 수 있는 가능성 역시도 배제할 수 없다 (Kircher & Raskin, 1992).

(3) 생물학적 관점
인간을 포함한 다양한 동물들에게서 테스토스테론의 저하는 성욕의 저하 및 성욕에서 비롯된 행동의 저하와 관련된다(Freund, 1980). 자궁 내의 신경발달학적인 요인이 소아성애증적 성향을 발생 가능성을 증가시킨다는 어느 정도의 증거가 있다.
